Replying to Something for school
“Letters from an American Farmer,� written by Crevecouer, starts off with the man asking his past people, “what country man they are.� He then describes his former country as a poor land which never put food on the table and whose fields were always bear. Vastly differing is the land he now inhabits, America. He tells of America’s broad ethnic diversity and the new race of men they now form and how he has no obligation to a higher power and can now warship independently and occupy whatever job he wants to. In America he is a citizen and is part of a country.
In, “I Hear America Singing,� Walt Whitman celebrates American spirit by showing the upbeat and cheerful tune of average Americans in their working daily life. He shows men, and women, who are strong in character and have the will do well in their lives, an opportunity that might not be achievable in other countries. Job Class is nonexistent, and no matter how different the occupations or people may be, they all share the same quality, passion for their country.
Richard Wright’s excerpt from, “American Hunger,� shows a different view of life in the states. He beings with his first impressions of the city of Chicago which is portrayed as a gloomy town filled with poor housing and ubiquitous smoke. His only goal is to find a job to feed only him, but each night he goes to bed hungry. After landing a quality job he was finally happy, he could now express himself through his writing and it put food on the table. But realizing that in order to keep the job he would need to take a physical examination, it left him a little weary. The weight requirement was 125 pounds, and after starving for so much time he struggled to tip the scale at 110 pounds. During the time before his test he started to read and write a great deal.
