^That would also mean NS would have to shell out magazine calibre money, and I don't know if you've noticed or not, but Doug and CK aren't exactly swimming in money. Why would they shell out big money for pro photos when we have a plethora of talented photographers on this site and a journalistic network that covers things for them? I mean fuck they might not all be the best or most brilliant photos, but some are super, and they get the job done. I mean fuck, for the big WSI article on here I shot the photos for the rail jam and Teddy shot the photos for Slope and Pipe, and you people seemed pretty stoked on those.

Back on topic: So Campbell I'm not exactly sure what you're saying here, but if I'm correct, ideally you'd be happy to see a professional online photo journal?

I agree witht he bit about just wanting a nice picture... All that writing and stuff in magazines is just taking up space and wasting ink. I mean fuck (tribute to The Dave), I don't really care what's going on in skiing, I just want to see fluffy white stuff and some dude bombing cliffs and jibbing things. Since I'll see the pictures, I won't even have to do it myself, so all those guides and info on different mountains in magazines are just wasting pages that could be put to better use with pretty advertisments, which tend to contain as little writing as possible. All in all, this makes me wonder... why can't our mags be more one-dimensional, and cater more to the lowest common denominator?

Maybe we should just get people who are assigned to certain resorts and get good park updates and photos from each resort.
I'd be down for giving up a day of skiing every week to shoot photos of randoms and posting them up. I'm sure those randoms would be pretty stoked to see themselves up on the internet. Alot of people have never seen decent pictures of them skiing before. Just an idea.

good call. that park update only had a few resorts. it would be wicked to have locals who can actually snap taking photos once a fortnight or so. get a selection of good quality photos

all you have to do is ride hard and you'll get ridden hard

high north session 3!!

The Journalist Network was originally designed to pay writers/ shooters w/ free stuff from the NS store. However, I don't think anyone really got anything for the work. No one really pushed the issue because we were all getting to do what we love to do, ski and shoot/ write about it. I was just at the Masters and had a killer time. I shot a lot and helped represent NS.com amongst the other media companies.
People kept coming up to us and telling us what a great thing we're doing for skiing. With that, I think we should keep this site as a link between the ams/ average skier to the heffe's in the industry. If this were just another ski magazine no one would take listen to what you have to say.

I get bored of magazines because they never change.

I'd love more uber-high quality shots on the internet that I could download and keep.

^very true but my point is that there should be as page for pro photogrphers to stick a few photos that didnt get into other media(mag,adds etc..).

I like magazines. I still subscribe to freeskier and powder. I like being able to take mags on trips and stuff. I reread most magazines many times. It's good to just have something with you to open up and look at for a couple of minutes(like when you are away from a computer).

Imagine the ns outcry if u(lateralis) were banned. There would be countless threads and petitions to bring u back, it would be like when treadway got banned from whistler. Someone would probably make and sell 'Free Lateralis' stickers and shit. -j

it would be cool to see ns more of a mag with pro pics and such, but i would think that there is a $$$ issue there. they couldn't compete in paying photographers for their shots. however it would be sick. i also think that mags are key. it is nice to have something that you don't have to sit at a computer to read. i really hate reading my computer screen. pluss it is nice to have mags for the coffee table.

also the little cards in the mags for renewing and shit make great filters for ....

as we redesign the content areas of the site for the fall we're definitely making areas to highlight more 'pro'-level stuff like photos, videos, articles, features, etc..

I've had a few photogs express some interest in having gallerys online... so if we can get access to material that's current I'd like to really step that kind of thing up.

I'm still organizing my thoughts on a lot of the stuff but I'll have a thread up shortly where everyone can give me some input on what they'd like to see the new content areas include.

As for the issue at hand (net vs. mags) I think there's a ton of room for magazines out there, they just need to stop focussing on the type of content that the net delivers better and start putting effort into features that give reflect the depth that's out there in skiing.

one advantage that magazines have is that they're in a prime position to actually SAY SOMETHING, make a statement, and have it presented in a manner that is permanent.

Some people hated FREEZE, others loved it, but at least there was some emotional connection to it becuase they were the ones putting themselves out there for all to judge.

To have a meaningful story you need the balls to tell it like it is but you also need the conviction of the idea in the first place. You have to stand for something, and that's what I think is lacking in what we're seeing in ski media these days.

No one has really stepped up to lead the sport and while NS has a very good oppourtunity to help it along, magazines have the resources to take it to the next level... as long as they're actually trying to do something with the sport and not just sell advertising on thicker and thicker paper each year.

My weiner is probably harder than yours.

With the internet and the availability of good quality digital photos now, magazine's coverage of special events isn't really that exciting anymore.
I always looked forward to seeing the parkasaurus issue of freeze every fall, or the WSI and US Open photos in freeskier.

I'll take this chance to completely agree with CK on what he said about the opportunity magazines have. Magazines have an opportunity and a venue to say something with impact and substance. In this day and age no magazine will ever be able to battle the internet for providing up to date news and event coverage. Magazines need to refocus what they cover, and how they cover it, to be successful in an age where they're not just competing with other magazines anymore.
Also agreeing with part of what Doug said, magazines have the opportunity to provide DEPTH that the internet can't. Sure you can get news faster online, but can you always get the whole story? Sure any swineherd can list the final results of the US Open, but do you get the jokes? The behind the scenes? The direct feel that is relayed through the connection that a lot of the talented writers in this industry have with the athletes? I don't believe so. Personally I will ALWAYS prefer a magazine to any coverage I find on the internet. Although I believe there is room for both magazines, and online coverage that NS provides, to bloom without conflict. What has to happen is each medium has to adapt and understand it's role. Once these roles are being filled comfortably and with understanding, both mediums can exist in relative harmony. I believe a better understanding of the roles that these mediums play in our part of the ski world will lead to an evolution of sorts where these prospective roles I mentioned are filled.
