[b] Kids Labeled the "Next Big Thing"

I think that skiing is slowly turning into an industry like snowboarding, where companies are going to try and market "the next big kid" and it's going to get out of control. I think it's cool that kids are young and ripping, but age doesn't matter its your skill level.

one reason that 'the next big thing' is more important than ever is the fact that there is a new mag coming out, ski time, that is aimed at a younger demographic than any mag has been yet. That is bound to bring lots of exposure to young athletes, and that makes the young guns who rip more valuable than before.
also, these young guns, for a fraction of the cost of an established pro, can break out and have a great result at a big event (ala dan marion), taking out pros who get paid much more. Keeping a close eye on who is about to shine is valuable. Hooking these kids up is only valuable if they result in sales, which will be more likely with the creation of ski time. i think.
but i also agree with binx, it is kind of ridiculous in a way. You take an established pro like JT Holmes, for instance, (this is hypothetical only), he could be having trouble maintaining his sponsorship because the company is busy hopping on the bandwagon, salivating over the standout grom. kind of weak, really.

yeah, but JT Holmes had his shot at the lime light at a young age (Warren Miller at 15 I believe) so who cares? it's no injustice to him, since he had that privilege as well.

I can't believe the amount of attention my 11 yr old freestyler is getting. His brother is a top ranked 10 yr old racer and no one notices..

"but age doesn't matter its your skill level."
Thank you. I love it when i hear about little kids ripping, but using age as an excuse to take a good 11 year old skier over a really good 18 year old is happening way too much.

age definitly matters man, I would choose watching a really good 12 year old over a really good 20 year old any day. kids just look so much cooler, the way they do everything, they can flail and still make it look smooth. Im a ski pedophile ,if you want, I like watching small kids.
I leave it up to you
I hope you find a good excuse
Because I've given about all that I can give
I could try to count the times
That I've been through this in my mind
But I'm running out of fingers
And I don't have that much time

I find it ironic that the person who started this thread is a little kid who rips super hard.

companies dont give a shit how old you are if your 8 or 18, they sponsor someone who is gonna rep there product and some one who will be noticed and publized and if people are paying attention to kids who rip there gonna get sponsored cuz it gets the companies product out there

i think this turned into exactly what binx didnt want it to turn into. i think hes right, its easier for companies to find up and comers who are anonymous, but huge on a local level, and market them into stars

FUCK yes!
I've had enough of 10 year old kids being noticed cause they can do a fucking 540. It pisses me off so much, there is a kid around here, and he's 14 (looks about 12) and he wins open mens becuase he looks so small and young. He won a comp last year with a 540, switch rail, 270 off a box and a switch 3. The guy that came second was 21 and did a backflip, switch 270 on, switch on switch off, switch 7. It's fuckin purely cause of the size and age. fucks me off so much. should be the skill, it's so much easier for these little midgets to do little spins!
And his radness, it just can't be quantified

okay... i somewhat agee with you guys. age shouldnt matter... 10 year olds shouldnt get paid for 540s, they need to be closer to pro tricks before they get paid. (on a side note--i know a 9 year old that has 9s...) but bigger age differences should matter more than little age differences, you have to give props to a 9 or 10 year old stepping it up to the same level as an 18 or 19 year old... but i believe there should be no more respect for a 14 year old than a 16 year old if they have the same skill level. i think if you are between the age of 14 to 26... you should get the same respect for your skill no matter what age you are...

^ They're not getting payed for just doing 540's... They're getting payed for doing sick rails, corked 7's, many various switch tricks all with mad midget steeze.
