i read alot of stuff on hear about sponsors and think it is comical shit.
what gives a person the reason to say their sponsored?? a proform on a pair of skis through the local rep? a picture on their local hills comp ad?
share your thoughts..

man you're stupid. so you think being sponsored is about people giving away stuff? if you were thinking about sponsoring people, is that what you'd do? do you think that's a smart business strategy. i wish i could give you dumb kids a crash course on... how not to be stupid and use your fucking heads, but i just don't have the time. the deal's gotta be mutual, and benefit both sides.

i.e.
armada sponsors tanner

- tanner gets free gears and rides for them
- armada gets an increase in sales because everybody sees tanner on armada's so they want them too.

so by putting tanner on a poster and giving him some skis, they sell an extra 30 pairs or whatever. that's the beauty of marketing.

both sides benefit, everybody is happy

I would say 5-10 per season on average, but I'm sure if TJ Schiller went to Armada asking for his 11th pair of skis for the season so he can compete in the orage masters, they're not gonna say "no, you already used up your 10, go buy some new ones yourself''

Tj Schiller is still an amature and he has a shit load of Armada skis and Orage gear. But he dosen't get paid.

It was stated well above me, the Amature still gets a lot of product, promotes his companies, mabey even has a travel budget, but dosen't get paid and dosen't have a salary/contract with a company.

A sponsored person could be any one that is given stuff or discounted greatly from a company, and has ties with that person, like a regional AM team...

Ok guys here is the downlow on a sponsorship. Yes Ian is right. It is a mutual relationship between the rider and company. It is a very importent tactic for a clothing company, ski, any sporting good company. People want the best right, so if they see tanner, who is one of the best, rocking the armada's the thought going through the persons head is, "o shit, tanners on the armada's, that means they got to be super good."
So that person will remember that company and buy them if they were confronted with a situation like if they needed new skis but dident know what to get they would remember that t-hall rides armada so there for there good and A quality product.

all need to keep in mind that it is way more complicated than the simple act of wearing your company's goods. sponsorship is so much more than being seen wearing a certain brand, it is a true working relationship between employer and employee. In this case, the employee is the skier, who must not only represent the brand in a fitting manner both on and off the ski hill, but also put in real hours working towards the success of the company. this can involve any number of things, from hosting events to designing graphics and logos etc etc etc. sponsorship does not simply entail taking free goods and disappearing to ski, it is a true job in the field of marketing and advertising. This goes for all athletes, ranging from the shop sponsored grom to THall and Pep. Now on that note, if you want to take your " 20" pairs of skis, do nothing to assist your employers, and disappear into the terrain park of your local mountain to " advertise" to the 5 kids who actually care about what you are wearing, then I wish you luck. It will take your local company rep about 2 months to figure out how worthless it is to give you any product at all.

ya^ Tj is pro for orage, red, and anon, but am for armada. same with ash battersby, she is pro for scott, red, icer, p crew, enom, and obermeyer, but am for line....she is pro, even if she says otherwise!

Why would you use a different pair of skis for urban every time?
People have one pair of urban skis. Bases and edges are not necessary when skiing down a small inrun and the 4 feet of flat to the jump.

Its to be on anything from discounts on shop stuff ( AKA Shop Sponsor) to getting freestuff and flying around. Also I think you really have to compete to get sponsored, just sending in a video doesnt mean anything if your not competing against others. But it doesnt have to be a giant national thing. Just bigger regional contests and getting noticed. all in all its getting freeshit, or getting ski when you need them, not when you want them.

you all are getting way to caught up in the four wall way of life. being sponsored doesn't matter at all, if you're good enough than fine but if not don't worry about it, that not what skiing is about. sponsorship is just a deserved convenience for the rider.

To everyone banging on the guy with the kid...screw off. At least this guy's pushing his little grom into freeride and trying to gather info. to help support him. Freeskiing's future will always be with the kids.

And certain companies will sponsor certain riders. Each company has it's own unique "identity." They will seek rider's who fit their profile and can represent them the way they'd like to be perceived.

This is not the case all the time of course. A very select few riders have the pure ability to act however they want and rely on their skills to get paid.

When these groms have a talent, they need some encouragement to get them on the right road, they aren't old enough to deal with the corporate companies on their own, so as parents we need to manage/guide them. You never know one of these groms maybe the next Tanner, thats what the companies are looking for. My kids 6 and we have a deal/sponsorship with Salomon and Bolle, these deals take some of the pressure off my pocket, it is an expensive sport. Travelling and competing cost a lot of money.

too many people get all hot and heavy on their hookups. anyone can have a hookup. a hookup is simply a connection. it can or cannot have nothing to do with how well you ski. i have hookups, but it has nothing to do with how well i ski. it's just a matter of knowing people who help you out and do you favors.

Thanks for the support guys. Man, there is alot of resentment and what appears to be anger on NS.. It fits though, afterall, it is FREE style.... Do what you want. I have 2 sons, my 10yr old a top ranked national racer, yet no one has run up to him wanting to know who he is and subsequently offer support. On the other "side" my 11yr old throws some 7's, slides all the boxes and rails and it gets all kinds of attention.. It appears very true that gear reps want to support the young ones, it is all about getting their advertising out to the ones who get noticed. BTW - it helps to have a positive attitude. Thanks again to those who post good knowledgable info.
