I don't really get it either, but if you have a certain amount of points on your license, it can be suspended until you are 18, or just for a couple of months.

I don't know how they judge how many points to give you, but it's bullshit anyway. I hate cops

I got a ticket last May and I tried it in court a couple weeks ago because I was accused of going 70 in a 50 zone when I was actually going 55. The cop did not have a radar reading on me, he was 3 blocks back, it was night, the roads were bad, and at the time of my ticket he had not taken the mandatory speed checking course. So, I LOST...I got royally fucked.....So I got a letter in the mail the other day saying that my license is suspended for 2 months because I have had 2 tickets in 2 years..and neither of them were for excessive speed. Out legal system is such a crack of bullshit. I even had a witness who testified for me in court and the cop even aggreed on everything that I had said.

The only enemy agaist progression is FEAR!

in drivers ed they say that cops are instructed not to pull pple over for going less than 10 over the speed limit you know unless its like really busy and lost of pple around. plus, the speedometer on cars is set so it says you r going like 3-5mph faster than u are so when ur going a lil over, ur not really speeding.

i know a guy, he was caught doing 153 in an 80(kmh) and he went to court and wasnt even given a ticket price cause the cop knew he was going to loose his liences. and the cop never showed so he got off. But then the same guy was doing 180 in a 70 and passed 7 cars going DOWN a hill, he passed an unmarked cop car. they pulled him over and the guy was off duty and gave him a warning. the cop said he was never seen anyone pass 7 cars in his 20 years on the force. the guy finally got a ticket the other day for rolling throught a stop sign on private property. thats a 150$ ticket but he is taking that one to court

My buddy was going 50 in a 40 zone and there was a cop in front of him. Quick thinking: he pulls out his camera phone and records his speedometer. The cop pulls over, turns on his sirens and pulls my buddy over. He says he's only going 50, cop gives him a ticket for going 60. My friend brought his phone to court and the judge waived everything.

i call bullshit^. You can take a picture whenever you want, on most phones it doesn't record time or anything. I seriously doubt the judge let him off for that reason

Actually it was a camera phone, not just a picture phone so it lets you take video. He taped his speedometer and the max he went was 50 then he taped the cop in front of him pulling him over. Since the cop put 60 but he was only going 50, he was let off.

the reason you got busted still is because speed didn't matter, you said yourself they weren't excessive speed tickets and the road was shitty.
So you were going too fast for conditions or too fast for the cops liking. He put 70 in the description of the careless driving ticket and you said you were going 55 and the judge thinks that is too fast for conditions?

Well, i saw the ticket, and i saw the video of the thing and my friend didn't pay it. The cop didn't have a radar, he was using his own speedometer because he was in front of my friend. Another reason why it was waived was because the cop wasn't behind him when he go pulled over.

There is a pretty simple and easy way around your ticket if you live in the united states. Simply go to the court date and ask for a plea and obeince. Plea no contest. the deal with the plea and obience is that as long as you dont get any traffic violations for 3 months your record will be wiped clean and you will not get any points, but if you get a ticket in the 3 month period you get both tickets and possibly twice the penalty.

Well they just told you a blatant lie in driver's ed.
Cops can and will pull you over for going 5 miles or less under the speed limit. Contrary to what driver's ed may have told you, police will even be instructed by their chief to do so - especially if they haven't given out many tickets that month.

The county, the courts, the police, and the governments all know and recognize that tickets mean cash-flow for the county. It's not about whether you are guility or innocent - they could care less. It's about money. Take the police officer to court and try arguing that you are innocent. The cop may even lie right out of his teeth.. and the judge knows this. But will not care because it's all a system for generating money that they have been through a thousand times.

Look on the back of the ticket. Do you notice how above all things, they make quite clear where and how to send them $ for the fines? If you try to fight the ticket and lose, they will emphasize where and how to send the money for fines, charges, etc.

Police are given a quota direct from their superiors and must give out a certain number of tickets. If they give out a few tickets for a month, they can get written up. This means that if they are falling short of the quota then they may set up a speed trap or give out tickets to those who don't deserve it.


Also, to answer someone else's question regarding why the police officer won in court when he did not even have a radar reading. It happens all the time.
There is a law that states that police officers are now able to guess someone's speed legally within 5 miles an hour. This means that cop could see someone drive by in a 45 mph zone and use his amazing sense of speed to determine that he must've been going 70 mph. It's a guess, he has absolutely no clue, but you can and will get a ticket for it. Because the police officer could be off by 5 miles per hour (which would then mean you could've been going 65) you can still get the ticket, because that would still place you above 45.

He does not need a radar, vascar, laser, or photo reading anymore. Because he is legally allowed to guess within 5 miles an hour of the speed and his word is the best evidence in this case.

But, do not worry. There's no reason why you can't beat him. Disprove the cop's ability to determine speed accurately. Drop a pen on the ground. Ask him if he knew how fast the pen travelled before it hit. Drop different items. Figure it out ahead of time mathematically how fast it travelled. The cop will have no clue.

In the event that you try to fight the ticket and take it to court. If the cop says he had a radar/speedometer reading that says you were going a certain speed. The judge will ask you for your testimony about what happened. Do not say a word. You are the defendent, you have the right to remain silent, anything you say in court will be used against you. The police officer is the prosecutor and it is his job to prove that you are guilty. Do not make his job any easier by opening his mouth.

The high courts have ruled that radar is a legal and accurate method of determining speed - providing that
1.the police officer has completed courses on operating radar (and has proof of it with him at the time of the trial)
2.has had the radar gun inspected and checked to be operating (and has proof of it with him)
3.Calibrated the radar gun before and after your ticket (and has proof of it with him at the time of the trial)

^however, if you do not ask the right questions this will be ignored because the police officer's testimony will be used as the best evidence. The judge may tell you that the documents are not necessary and that the police officer's word is good enough.

It's not. That's bullshit, and the judge knows damn well it is. This is where you kindly grace the judge with a copy of case law and the high courts ruling. He can not ignore it. He knows that if he does, you can appeal it and take it to the high courts and his name will be on the line. The police officer will be forced to show the documents that he does not have. You will win.

I will tell you that last year I was going over 90 mph. I ran from the cops. I ran stop signs. I received a huge speeding ticket. I was guilty as can be. I took the ticket to court. I won.
It's not about being innocent or guilty. It's whether the cop can prove it.

I have seen police lie in court time and time again and get away with it. Don't lie, don't make up any stories, and even if you are in the right don't tell the judge anything. The second you open your mouth and say 'I wasn't going that fast!' you will be found guilty. But, if you approach it like I have said earlier, you will win.

^ not true, in fact they can pull you over in their family car when they are off duty in their street clothes if they think you are endangering people, happens all the time, happened to me for racing.
Always go to court, always keep your mouth shut, if you are going to say any word at all say "prove it beyond reasonable doubt" and that is all. If they prove it and you are guilty, then there you go. Chances are if you get an extension on your court date, the cop won't remember or be on vacation.

to evenuse a radar cops have to guess up to 5 cars speeds while another officer uses a radar. in order to use a radar the cop must be within 2 miles an hour of the acctual speed. My dad was a cop. So usually if a cop is guessing ur speed he's damn close

This came driectly from a current police officer telling us in traffic school, when I got my ticket. They don't have quotas, but some cops will be anal and pull you over for something minor, like 5 mph.

When its the end of the month..and your are driving to the skatepark, and within 3 blocks you see 3 people pulled over and 2 other cop cars rollin around.

Yeah that was a lot of police-age for one day..I saw soooo many cops that day.

ive been pulled over 3 times for speeding.. one ticket.. and i only had to take a traffic class.. wasnt to bad.

wtf are u talking about? if u mail the ticket in within like a month they reduce it to 2 points and u start with 6 points until u are 18 u won't lose your lisecense. I've got two under my belt, one was 6 points reduced to 4 or 3 (had to go to court) and then one that got reduced from 4 to 2 and i can still drive. i'm getting a cop detector and laser jammer for sure though cuz one more might end my driving career.

It's called speed beyond reason. I've gotten one, and I know for a fact I wasn't speeding. I took it to court. Did I win...No. My word against an officer of the law.

It was 2am and I was the only car on my side of the road, I saw a car coming. My initial thought was is this a cop? So I checked my speed, 35 in a 35. Saw the cop, thought nothing of it. about 2 miles down the road I notice a car flying up behind me, no lights, I though it was some jackass. But then he lit up the lights and sirens. I was blown away. I'll admit at them time I had about 4 tickets on my record, so my word wasn't worth shit. I drive a subaru, non turbo, slow as hell. He accused me of speeding, I said I know that I wasn't as politely as possible. He then said "well I didn't radar you, but you appeared to be going too fast". Ok....then accused me of having illegal lights, Blue lights lighting my license plate. I said I'll fix it, he said no that ok. He then accused me of spinning my tires. I said, "this is an all wheel drive subaru with barely 2 liters of displacement, it can't spin the tires. I was raging by this time, because I felt harrased. Not only was I being falsely accused, but 2 other cops drove by and his partner checked every part of my car.

On the other hand, I have been let of for going 20mph over the limit.
