so i figured out you save a lotta money if you put your car in neutral coming home on I-70 even on the slightly downhill parts. i have an automatic car. so is it bad to shift from neutral to drive while going 70??

HAHA, youre such a moron. Im sooo glad that RPMs have 100% to with gas consumption. Its definitely not if your foot is on the throttle or not... noo....

Your tach doesn't work then. The faster rotation of the torque converter is going to naturally increase the RPM's of the engine due to the fact they are connected. Not one for one like a manual transmission , since there is no slippage, but just due to the fact they're turning in the same direction and connected. Anytime you're going down a steep hill, if you put the transmission in neutral, the car is going to speed up. Why? Because the engine is no longer slowing the car down.

Okay, I will agree with that because I just had an oppertunity to drive another car in which what you describes happens. But in my '97 Volvo 850, this is not the case (and I imagine there are other automatic transmissions out there which behave the same way). The tach isn't fucked up, because you can listen to the engine and when you pop it in N at highway speeds, the engine doesn't slow any faster then when you simply take your foot off the pedal in D. I don't know the technical reasons for this happening, but it does happen.

If the engine does not slow the transmission down and thus the car, I would be concerned about low transmission fluid level, or slipping bands.
