so i figured out you save a lotta money if you put your car in neutral coming home on I-70 even on the slightly downhill parts. i have an automatic car. so is it bad to shift from neutral to drive while going 70??

good question. I really have no idea. I would stick with not giving it gas. I don't think it would hurt your car, it isn't like you are reving it and dropping into gear, but I may be wrong.

then someone should rent a car, drive it up i-70 or something and cruise it back to denver... then do it again and again and again... with insurance of course... and see if you smell anything... or if the tranny explodes or something... or gremlins come after you

that would cost sooooo much. i think it would take a long while to notice an effect. i used to do that on the way home from a weekend at the mountains. i work/ski all weekend at our hill so the whole trip home, (like 40 miles) i coast and then give it a little gas on the hills, and i did it for a long time so idk man

i don't see how it would matter. think about it, you're going 70 in neutral, you shift into drive (while not giving it gas).
i think the transmission knows what to do.
whoever talked about jumping gears though, what do you mean? in a stick shift, you wouldn't shift it from neutral into 1st, then, 2nd, etc up to 5th. You'd put it straight into 5th. otherwise you'd be engine breaking. i'd guess the automatic does the same.

I think it only does a slight amount of damage when you put it back into drive but like itll take soo long to wreck your tranny by doin it your ok. But back to phrophets change of topic, i think it would be halarious to rev the shit outta a rental mini van and then just drop it into gear, make sure you pay you 9 dollar insureance first tho ahaa

I don't think it does anything at all.
It's the same as putting the clutch in on a standard and putting it into neutral, and then back again.
I'd just be afraid of skipping past neutral and into reverse or park.
Boy would that suck huge.

I used to do that all the time on I-70... if you start on one of those hills when youre getting down closer to denver, you can coast for forever... My friends and I always had competitions to see who could keep it above 55 the farthest in neutral, if I remember, the record was 15 miles or something like that...

BRO- No one gets this....
When youre in N, youre idling, thus taking 16 times amount the gas it takes as just cruising. Youre gaining nothing if you do it. If you put your car in OD (4th gear for an auto), then all thats keeping the gears running is the momentum and wheels of the car, not the engine idling. Dont put it into N cuz it saves you nothing.

Yeah when your going 70ish on the thruway putting it into neutral downhills its pointless assuming you have an car with overdrive.

yeah i have a namual car and when im goin down hills and i really need to save gas i just turn the car off, it kinda sucks when you lose your power steering but the car can still coast fine and your obviously not using any gas until you start the car up again, now im not sure if turning the car on uses a lot of gas or not, but if it doesnt, then turning your car off but leaving it in drive or nuetral would work, i actually did that with my parents minivan a few times and it worked fine

Depends what brand of car youu have, i used to be a mechanic assitant at GM. Now i found that with the older casr this did not do shit, but if you have you have a newer car, or truck ( especially the trucks when in 4x4) this will fuck up your tranny, and the front and rear differential.

wow you guys are fucken idiots..
i love the fuck off who said it takes 16 times more gas when idling
most cars idle at like 750-1000 RPM
while cruising in 3rd or 4th your usually at 3k RPM
And no, going from drive to N at any speed wont do anything. Even when you go back to drive it wont do anything, its just like reving your car hard.

you know what that is really funny , especailly if you cars computer does not dissenguage the front differential, or the torque converter. In a standard you just have to press the clutch, and it dissenguages everything, but an automatic it is not so easy.

its bad because it dries out your carborator, which is BAD. you'll have a lot more problems with your car if you do it.

It doesn't do shit to your car. But there really isn't any reason to pop it in neutral, because with the engine already reved up it will use pretty much the same amount of gas as if you left it in gear and took your foot completely off the gas.

Well that would explain why your car is fucked up, not because you popped it in neutral.

it's fine to put your car in neutral, don't worry about it. I do it all the time in my standard... it's kinda part of shifting and my dad doesn it all the time with his car which is automatic. And he's crazy about that car, he wouldn't so it if he wasn't sure it was alright.

yer not gonna save gas doing that. and i am pretty sure that coasting in drive and nuetral is the same damn thing.

no see the reason i did it was because you coast so much faster in neutral. when your in gear theres more resistance, or whatever you wanna call it

Ya, definitely saves gas in neutral. Check your tack, coasting in drive it's usually at 1500 RPM where as neutral it goes down to 0 - 500 RPM.

That is only true if you are idling in neutral. When you are moving and take the car out of drive and pop it in neutral, the RPM will be at the same as when you popped it in neutral. Also, the RPM will decrease at about the same speed as if you took your foot off the gas and just left it in drive.

Not true^. All you have to do is listen if your automatic car doesnt have a tach - you can clearly hear that the rpms go down when you put it into neutral, even if youre going fast. the fact is, taking your foot off the gas while still in gear going down a hill takes more gas and slows you down (depending on how fast youre going) because the gears are still engaged, so the wheels are actually speeding up the engine, making it run at a higher rpm. get in an outomatic, go down a really big hill, and pop it in neutral, you will feel the car speed up and the rpms go down. THen, put it back into drive, you will hear the rpms go back up and feel the car slow down. Try it.

Ya, I'm pretty sure your mistaken. I drive standard so I don't really know because I drive auto so seldomly that I've never tried to save fuel. But in standard the RPMs definitely bottom out when you pop it into neutral.

I have a Lexus with in dash computer that shows miles per gallon. I pop it in neutral every trip home from the mountain and get 70-80 mpg, when I normally average 20-21mpg. All you have to do is watch the tach. If the RPM's drop, you use less fuel. Putting a car in neutral whether a stick or auto is going to drop the RPM's from 2-3 thousand RPM's to about 700 RPM's at 60-70 mph. As for damage to the transmission, the torque converter is just like a clutch and slowly re-engages the drive train to the engine. The only way you're going to do any damage is if you go past neutral into reverse. Then you're in deep shit. As for a carburetor drying out, it depends on what kind of fuel pump you have. If it's a mechanical fuel pump, as long as the engine is turning, fuel is being pumped into the carburetor. If the engine isn't turning, the fuel to the carb stops, however, you're also not using any fuel so the carb will not dry out. If you have an electric fuel pump, which most cars now have, as long as the key is on, the fuel is pumping. However, as several people already said, carburetors are few and far between anymore. Most cars are fuel injected. Just don't turn your engine off, as you will lose power steering, and worse yet, run the risk of locking your steering wheel. There's no worse feeling that not being able to steer when you're going down a winding mountain road at 70mph with your steering locked straight ahead. Oh, and also your power breaks will no longer work, so you can't stop either. That would make for one very, very bad day.

I just did it about five minutes ago. I have an automatic with a tach. I was going about 65, popped it into neutral and watched the RPM slowly fall from 2500 RPM at aprox. the same rate as when I simply eased off the gas. The gearing only begins to slow the car down once the automatic transmission downshifts.
