i dunno about boards or anything but go with friends and wear a rashguard, first time i surfed a few years back i didnt and i surfed all day and when i got out to get some water i went back in and the board gave my chest a wicked rash and the salt water burned the piss outta me. oh and when you are rippin a wave flip people off and wear loose shorts so they come off when you get up...no joke, done it at oregon and maui, its hillarious

for the board...it depends on how big the waves are. i go to school in florida where the waves are usually crap, so i have a longboard. it's actually 7'3..not exactly a longboard, but i'm short so it's long for me. if there are good sized waves though go for the shortboard cause it's more fun and easier to duckdive.

I would recommend getting a longer board as your first board (+8'). The first board I surfed on is a 9'2" and it was really easy to learn the basics and stand up as well. In bigger surf it will be more difficult to duckdive under the waves with a longboard but you can paddle faster to beat the closeout sets. It will be harder to learn on a shortboard, especially in smaller waves. For the most fun, start out with a longboard or funboard and then you can progress to a shortboard. That's what I did and it's helped my surfing and knowlege of what's going on in the water.

in general, the bigger the wave, the shorter the board. i like riding my 9'0" on 5-6 foot waves. and when the waves are bigger i ride smaller boards. i like riding 8-9'ers on my 8 foot boards. and then i switch down to my 6'11" boards.
but for boards, for your very first one, get a softop board. they have a layer of foam on the top coating it so its softer. often, they have these fins that have a softer rubber on the edges, too.
then, for your next board, I really reccoment Patagonia Epoxy boards, Arrow, Sparky, Junod, Haut and Robert August.
BUT there are boards called Surftec boards. they are an epoxy board and are about 6 lbs lighter than a regular board. Plus, they have Tuflite covering on them, which makes them super durable and strong. they run you about $900 new. my FAV one is Haut, i fucking love that board .
my absolut fav. board is my Patagonia 9'0" Epoxy board, though. its my BABY.
as for wetsuits, it depends where you live. def. wear at leats a rash guard, though. i live in central california and in the winter i wear a 2/3 or a 3/4 oneill wetsuit, if i wear one. (most people always wear them but i find it to be a hassel) so in the summer in most places, all you will need is a 2/3 or a 3/4. i just wear a rashguard. make sure to get a UV rashie, too.

Start with a longboard, there will always be waves big enough and you'll get the basics down faster. I go to school in Malibu, home to the world famous longboard break, so much fun to cruise and walk the borad on perfect peelers. Find a friend who is patient, knowledgable and willing to teach you. Southern California I wear a 3/2 in the winter, trunk in in the early fall. 3/2 all summer in Norcal, unless its a super hot day.

snowisfun definetly has most of the basic topics covered ie go witha longbaord for your first board. however the epoxy boards aka tuflite suck. sure the boards are light, but they feel squirelly underneath your feet. also they have no character because a machine pumps out like 100's a day. not one pro uses tuflite board, becauase there gay. there more expensive and the rides you get arent as fun.

start with a long board or a foam board... then for your next board you might want to look for a local shaper, so you can get a board that will be good for surfing the break you have.
