Declaring purchases at customs...

If you buy something that has been previously used in the USA, and bring it back to canada (or vice versa), you're supposed to declare how much it's worth and whatever so they can tax you on it...
How does customs know how much it's actually worth?

You need an invoice of approx value, or Certificate of Origin, They'll slap a value on it for you, They look it up in their huge database
You can do it, if you try, if not oh well, then do somthing else!

So if it's a pair of skis, but you tell them you bought them from someone for $100, but they don't believe, you, they can just give you a fine and take them away if they wanted to? Just because the price listed is more?

haha, funny story... i was in spain on a school trip and my friend is a medieval time freak. he saw this giant ass excalibur-type sword and decided to buy it. when we got to the airport to come back to canada, everyone in there was just like... 'what the fuck?!' cause he didn't rap it or anything. he was just casually walking with his luggage and a big ass fuckin sword in his hands. three security guards ran up to him and said 'sir, what are your intentions with that sword'. he pleaded his case, but they took the sword from him. sucks, it was enormus, and looked rather expensive.
stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

That's funny shit...I don't know what I would think if I saw a dude walking through the airport with a huge sword, especially if he was trying to get on my plane with it! haha

say it was a present that is worth 60 dollars or less and you well get no taxes. I got some skis shipped and the dude wrote Happy Birthday on the box and then declared it as a 60 dollar present and i got no brokrage fees or taxes put on it. I love you KAF.

Would it be the same thing if I were to bring the box itself through the border, not just have it shipped?

unless you look suspicious and act like a tool, they won't even search your car or anything. Just declare a 60$ gift.
