So i have this problem i cant figure out, and i know its basic, but i'm having a brain lapse, its on a test that i have to finish, so i need the correct answer, which ends up in the range of 30 some degrees Celcius. Problem is as follows:

5grams of steam with a temperature of 245 degrees Farenheit(118.333 C) is bubbled down to a temperature of 100 C. its then mixed with 100grams of water at 20 C. What is the final temperature?

Does it talk about the number of moles? Because then you could use pV=nRT but I think that problem is a diffusion problem. I'm not very good at thermo though.

no dont use that thats for chem...use to phase change and temperature change formulas...i cant remember them but if thats what you're learning you should know them

the total heat energy is the same

5 *245 = initial heat, then it loses the amount of heat in (5 * 100)

and then the specific heat of water * 100 (grams) * 20 has to equal the heat lost when you change the steam from 245 to 100

so we'll call SHS (specific heat of steam)

SHS * 245 * 5 - SHS * 5 * 100= SHS * 20 * 100 + SHS * 5 * temp (which you wanna find)

you gotta look up the SHS b/c it's a given value

yeah, its Q=mass*specific heat*delta Temp

i figured it out, its like 45.2157 Degrees C

C=specific heat
T=temp
H=specific heat of vaporization

its Temp Final = (m*C*deltaT+m*H+(mass2*C*T))/(m*C+m*C)

so it comes to be:

Temp Final=((5g*2020J/kg*18.3)+(5g*2.26*10^6)+(100g*4180J/kg*20))/((5g*4180J/kg)+(5g*4180J/kg))

Grams, Joules/Kilogram all cancel, leaving you with the Celcius degrees of 45.2157 C Degrees

specific heat is Cp, not sh. sorry, but thats like the only thing i know about thermodynamics, short of the first and second laws, and a really basic understanding, so i jsut thought id chime in.

If you have all your thermo tables you don't need Cp because it is merely an approximation (as it changes) unless you do its integration, as Cp= dh/dt, but I think you might not be doing that stuff at this point. It's funny though because I probably couldnt even do this question and I just wrote a final on this shit a week ago. Hmmm, haven't got my mark back yet.
