OSX Tiger

i've had it for exactly a week now and i like it alot, dashboard and spotlight are worth the $70 alone, but there's also some other little built in things i noticed that are cool as well...mail is different, as well as a couple other programs...don't notice much of a speed boost at all, unlike with panther when i noticed a huge speed bump...all in all i'd say its worth buying tho

apple is a big rich company jsut like hp, microsoft, and ibm. only 9% or whatever of computers sold are macs, but all that money for the os and the whole amn computer goes straight to apple. which means that apple has 9% of all the money that is made on all the computers. which means that they are a big company that makes alot of monay and that i dont mind ripping them off. im currently downloading a torrent of osx tiger (its at 12% now) and Final cut pro hd. i have no money right now so asside from the fact that i dont mind ripping off large companies, its not like they will be getting any money from me for a damn while anyways.

Minor things?! You apparently haven't done much research on it. The number of changes and enhancements are huge.

p.s. Apple's computer sales and market share are more like 6%...not 9%. They peaked at 14% when Steve Jobs came back and have been down around 4-6% the last year or so.

antadam..you may think they are "Major" changes..but there isn't too much thats too extensive thats been changed.

Dashboard is exactly the same as a pre-existing program called Konfabulator. Konfabulator's website has 100s of widgets. Mac just wanted to create there very own widget program because they knew they were getting so popular.

Spotlight Find Is a search feature that is actually available through another site that features Mac customization. It just adds a search feature to your toolbar..which does exactly what spotlight does.

Some other stuff like the Dictionary App and the Enhanced dock menu are just minor changes. A lot of other changes have gone into the system that you won't even notice.

I still think its well-worth the buy because I'm always down to support apple. But most changes you won't notice.

haha Konfabulator rules. And a lot of those widgets are stuff like dictionary and google things are kind of like different browsers for IE or mozilla or whatever. Widgets is a wierd name for those thingies though....

Not being rude, keep in mind I'm a code monkey w/network security and wireless apps so I might pick apart the whole minor changes thing...(and it's not meant to be rude, so don't take it that way, please...I don't have anything against you).

You're right in saying the major changes you probably won't notice, but if you haven't used it yet you really can't say that. Saying major changes are how your machine looks to the end-user is not a legitimate definition of major changes. If that were true I'd could upgrade Win XP from SP1 to SP2 and then install a theme editor and make my machine look like an ice cream shop. Yeah...xp'll crash before you can install SP2, but you get the point. A lot of core code was changed and a lot of the open darwin code was merged into this release.

I know what konfabulator is...I've been using macs sinces the IIc+ (that's like '86 or so)...I miss oregon trail.

What do you expect for major changes? It seems as though a major change to most of you is the jump from win 3.1x to win 95...but that's like jumping from being constipated to having explosive diahrrea.

I, honestly, can't think of any OS except for the jump from win 3.1x to 95 and mac 9.x (classic) to os x (or even pre-releases of rhapsody blue, yellow, and red box) that had anything that was a major change to the average user.

No upgrade has ever been souly for the sake of pretty colors. I think the confusion here is that your major changes definition is how stuff appears to the user while mine is the underpinning code and actual functionality (See: WinXP & ctrl-alt-delete are better friends now than they ever were). Go read that Ars Technica article I posted and you'll understand what I mean when I say a lot was changed (or don't...it's sorta long).

p.s. I know we both have lives, so I'm not arguing w/your point of view...just making a point that a lot has really changed to those who do more than type in word.

One more thing...you guys keep talking about torrenting the file. You do realize that you could've gotten it faster in any one of the mac usenet newsgroups, right?

Tiger server w/unlimited connections and the normal end-user os are both posted (I don't condone stealing it from apple though).

fuck man, its only a broad statement. From Panther, Tiger hasn't gone over any big changes. 200 new features are basically things which have been tweaked to make os x even easier. I said minor because they didnt totally revamp the os or anything. They just improved it.
