like sex? and beautiful women? and style? here's your intro to the new wave, the french new wave. a period in french filmmaking that changed filmmaking universally.

jean-luc godard's (the most famous of the french new wave directors) 'masculine feminine' is being rereleased into theaters in select cities. it's always better in the theaters:

the whole hand held camera filming just makes everything look sloppy. the whole mise-en scene might have been better if they had some better god damn lighting to.


but this is just one mans opinion ^

breathless wasn't amazing but you have to appreciate what he was doing. its just like anything new or innovative. ever listen to the germs (old school punk band)? they sound like shit, the singer is horrible, they taught themselves how to play the instruments, but thats irrelevant because they built a style out of that and they are one of the most revered american punk bands. godard kind of made punk films, he showed real life, things that other filmmakers didn't even concieve of putting on film. he and the rest of the guys saw a huge hole in filmmaking and attacked the shit out of it. there are so many movies that wouldn't be the way they are today without he and the rest of those new wave guys.

^actually thats a bad analogy, godard actually knew what he was doing with his camera, he could have made something that was typically finessey, but he forged a new style...thats a little better.
