I know this topic is old, but i have a few questions to add. I don't know whether to get the 171 or 181 (02/03 model obviously). I am 5'10' and 185lbs, but before you all yell 181 consider this. I live in the MW and have been skiing for about 15yrs, and I ski out West 1 week a year. Although I have been skiing for 15 yrs. i just started skiing the park last year and can only do a 360 w/ no grab. Okay, I talked to like 3 or 4 different guys at ski shops and they all said 171. I am basically 60% all mtn and 40% park but all i ski in the MW is park b/c everything else sucks. I know the 181 would be better for all mtn, but the shop guys told me the 171 wouldn't sacrafice that much performance and it would still be okay in moderate pow, do you agree? It would make sense that this years 171 would have about as much float as last years 177 b/c it is much wider all over. Also, I ski what pow and steeps I can when i'm out west, but let's not kid ourselves, when you only get 1 week out there you may not get a chance to do any. One last thing, I like to ski bumps also, I know the 1080 is not great for that, but if i did ski them w/ the 1080's would the 171 be a lot better for that or would it matter.
One last thing, has anyone out there that is my size skied the 02/03 1080 in 171, if so how was it?
Sorry , this is so long I just know if i don't explain why I am considering the 171 everyone will just say 181, 181, 181.....right away.
Thanks

181 would be better for 60% all mtn and 40% park but 171 would be better for the 40% & muguls & trees.
I would take the 181 though better for the 60%, you will still be able to throw tricks (the ski is soooo lite) better for the hard pack (more stability) and that the ski is sooo soft with your weight you need the 181 sorry. 171 would feel all squrily unless it was 80% park!
Do be affraid! either ski will work but the 181 will be better for what you want. I am 5'7' 175lb and very agressive and strong when I ski and I can ski both, but for me the 171 is better.
I hope this helped...

Let me ask you this... how old are the ski shop guys you've talked with? Have they tried both pairs? Do you think that they ever ski park? What are the longest skis they carry? Do they even carry the 1080 181s?
If the answer is no to most of these questions, which I think is probably the case, they will most def'n say 171. This is because they are used to selling 'carving' skis for older men, (especially in the mid-west) which are in general much shorter.
The bottom line is get the 181s thats what I'll be riding and I don't weigh nearly as much as you.

I live in the midwest and would definatly go with the longer skis. It seems being 185 lbs, that the longer skis would better suit your weight. It just preference though and this is ONLY my opinion. Ask yourself this, what is the current length of your skis and are you happy with them!

What do you think would be best sized ski for me: salomon teneighty 171, rossignol scratch fs 174, volkl v-legend 178 or dynastar concept 180? I'm 5'10' and 155.

I would go with the longer ones. whats just the way I see it. though you seem to be in favor of the 171s. go with either. you will be happy with either. and there will be moments either way that you will wish you wen twith the other.

to the first guy i am 5 9 and weigh about 170.
i have been skiing for 15 years and one year freeskiing and i have also skied the 02 03 1080 in both sizes and it is a real light ski that is an awesome all mtn ski and pretty good park ski.
i prefered the 181 over the 171 and with your height and weight the 71 will just be to soft for you even if you are skiing moguls.
181 and if it makes a difference to you i work in a shop.
i am in the west and ski tahoe and mammoth and therefore have no clue how shitty MW is other than what i have heard.
to the other guy concepts are the best park ski hands down in my opinion.

i've skiied both and trust me if you were skiing blind folded you wouldn't know the difference. The only difference was that you did notice the extra length when spinning. Although the 181 will be better for powder i really doubt that you'll be skiing knee/thigh deep stuff
