i went to steamboat this past week and the locals were telling us how their "champagne powder" is supposedly the best in north america. something to do with the moisture sources and something else, i dunno.

I don't think there is one "best" powder place, it all depends on what year it is, like this year I'm sure that anywhere in the Tahoe region was amazing powder, but other years it differs.

to get all technical utah usually has the lowest water density, which would make it the best, lower water density equals lighter dryer powder
ive got another version of the pole dangle, its pretty funny too, gets cold when i do it on the lift tho.

going to have to agree with that utah has very dry powder, tahoe tends to be pretty moist, sierra cement.

alaska's pow is thicker though thats why it sticks to mountain faces that way. , utahs is freakin light and I really think our when we get it is super light too usually.

basically anywhere with real mountains more than 300 km inland from an ocean will do for me. Isnt Bella Coola right on the coast, all the vids where Seth skis there look absolutely sick, so I guess its probably just north enough for light stuff...

all that matters is the surface temp and the relative humidity in the air around the surface. assumeing its cold enough to create snow. utah has very light snow because they are far inland so most of the moisture in the air has been used up. but when the systems hit the tall mountains the air is forced to rise above the mountains and every last but of moisture is squeezed out of the air. this creates the fluffy perfect powder that is not weighed down by surface moisture. another way to get powder is if its very very cold. then there cant be as much moisture in the air because colder air cant hold near as much moisture as warmer air, therefore there isnt anything to prevent the snow from staying very dry, very light, and very fluffy. this is what happened this year in the east coast when we got that foot and it was -10 and the snow was powdery just like snow in utah.
