Carving Switch?

Until I searched the forums, I didn't even know anyone carved switch, i thought it was just going straight and snowplowing X_X.

But when i was searching, ther wasn't really anythong on carving switch, anyone got any tips? How long does it take to learn?

i just started, it only takes a couple of runs once you get used to skiing backwards. just lean alittle forward. up the hill. look over the shoulder your turning with, and just commit to carving the whole turn, it makes it easier toi learn. just tryit on an easy cruzer green first tho.

u put all of ur force on ur inside ski and look over ur outside shoulder, its really hard to learn to turn right

it takes a bit to get ur lead changes good when ur going backwards, prob takes as long to learn to carve forward

just pratice abunch on the ground as yer goin.(sliding on snow) that will help you learn transitions and prevent numerous embarassing falls

it helped me when i concentrated on opening my hips up to the fall line instead of just turning my neck and shoulders. that'll help get your feet in the correct position (slightly staggered) and make it more comfortable to look over your shoulder. just practice looking over both shoulders and you'll be linking turns in no time.

The other day I ended up falling on a zero spin, but stayed on my skis. I fell downhill and ended up skiing switch lying with my back on the tails going down hill, I had plenty of speed from the landing and was moving, no way to turn, and i couldn't stand up, the only way to stop was for my to roll over and sort of slide on my side, well it wasn't that easy and I lost a ski and got a jacket full of snow and some nice and wet goggles, it was dope...

Yeah I learned pretty quick even though I cannot do hard carving turns. Just simple wide carves which is good enough for now.

look over your outside shoulder....haven't any of you seen pollard or pep switch carve in any ski movie?

but that's once you get it down pretty good....just get comfy going switch and when you want to try to learn how to carve start by just looking over one shoulder, and eventually switching shoulders will just come naturally

yeah carving backwards is fun as hell. you have to stagger your skis though. like if you are carving left, your left ski should be a little farther down the hill than your right one. and then oppisite when you carve to the right.

I wouldn't overly stagger my skis carving regular so why would I carving switch, it makes it look less steezy in my opinion. If you keep your skis parallel and RELAX it will be nice. RELAXATION is key, just don't freak out and think you are going to hit a tree. Look at Pollard when he carves switch. He is so relaxed that is what makes it look good. Also, you don' have to look over a particular shoulder, though i find if you look over the shoulder that will be downhill it looks smoother. IF you look over inside shoulder(or under rather)you end up looking like Mike WILSOn...

watch how much pep staggers his pistols skiing switch in focused. it is insane. obviously, that is a little overdoing it for hardpack, but it does make it easier to set an edge since your knees and ankles do not bend in the downhill direction while skiing backwards.

you have to stagger your skis carving switch, because the joints in your legs dont work the same skiing switch, and youre upper body is in a completely different position

inside shoulder, outside shoulder, it doesn't matter. People just do whatever's comfortable. Like I look over my right shoulder (when turning left and right) and lean back a little when I carve switch.

i usually only look over my right shoulder because my left eye is lazy. it doesn't go to the left corner.

I carve switch alot whenever Im going on a boring groomer. I think its easiest if you turn your head to look whichever way youre carving. Also Id recommend taking off your goggles.

just remember to keep your lower half of your body independent from the top.

start out by going backwards and doing slide turns and then gently progress into leaning into it more and lean forward also.
u'll get there.

Just ski switch as much as you can.

if you are carving normal, you want your body to stay upright, and your skis and ur legs to move under you. the same holds true for switch. for one of the best examples (since i dont think ur gonna be carving switch in pow anytime soon, so pollard or pep's vids wouuldnt work) look at charles gaginer in high five, where hes coming into the 70 fooot death gap. or if you have seen the volkl team movie take two, lars veen has one of the smoothest switch carves ever. just keep ur skis together, dont put them shoulder width apart like tanner, cuz that looks rediculous, and put pressure on the outside one. for me, i find it comfortable to look over my right shoulder all the time. and when you start to get some speed, dont puss out if u think ur out of control, because ur probably not, just hold on to it

...and, don't let you're pole tips hit the snow. It'll throw you out of whack.

Happens to me at least once a day. I'm all relaxed, making good turns and one of my poles hits the snow. All of a sudden, I'm fighting to keep my balance. This happen to anyone else?

i would agree with of the other posts and say that you should just check out films and watch pep and pollard. I remember watching pollard ski that whole face switch in "the frontline" (i think that was it)...and i was trying it then myself...but it didn't all come together for some reason until i watched pep in 1242 last year. just try to mimic the movement...staggering your legs with each turn really helps. just learn from the vids and then try to ski switch all the time...skiing entire groomers switch can be a lot of fun and it's good practice.

i always look over whatever is my outside shoulder of the turn...so swtich and carving to my right, i look over my left...and carving to my left, i look over my right. you just want to alternate looking over your outside shoulder with each turn...the shoulder you look over will change with each turn.

does that make sense?

Practiced today only loooking over my lseft shoulder. Damn, so much easier on twintips haha. Anyhow, I was just taking a shower, I bent head down to rinse shampoo, and my neck cramps like hell, and now it hurts. ^^. Guess this is from riding switch? :S or maybe a wipeout? lol.

Thanks for all the tips guys, it helped. Although I had some people looking at me weirdly =/

Btw, anybody got any tips for taht intial jump? To like jump 180 when going down the hill? I can do it but I think i'm doing it wrong, my ankle hurt everytime I tried to do it...

It doesn't take to long to lean. the key is to keep you weight on you tails and move your legs in a out as if u were carving front. it shouldn't take you too long.
