it takes a shit load of people skills. you travel around a whole bunch and get paid squat. that's why most reps work for more than one company.

You need contacts, experience, and credibility.
You do get paid a ton if you have a hot line and a good territory, but if you're selling snowboards in florida you won't do as well as if you sold them in Colorodo.
It also depends on what big box stores are in your territory...a guy may have two accounts, but if one of them is The sports authority he's going to kill the rep next to him with 50 accounts and no big box accounts...
