Danny Way to Jump Great Wall of China
Press Release, DC Shoes
You did not read the headline wrong, and the rumors you've heard are true: Danny Way is set to jump the Great Wall of China on on May 28.
The Great Wall of China? On a skateboard?
During the last week of February, Danny and his crew, including JT, the Mega Ramp builder from VPI, visited Beijing, China to survey the projected Great Wall site.
Danny also met with the Chinese Minister For Extreme Sports—yes, they have one—and got the official government blessing for the jump.
The jump is planned for the amazing Ju Yu Gong Gate part of the Wall, located about 20 miles outside Beijing. It's one of the most important cultural sites in China, and Danny is honored and excited to have the opportunity to bring skateboarding to the biggest nation in the world in such a dramatic fashion.
Plans call for a structure around 120-feet-tall ramp, with a 75-foot-tall roll-in and a 30-foot-tall, 100-foot-wide quarter pipe. The ramp will give Danny the chance to set three new world records—distance, height out of the quarter pipe, and speed.
Simply put, it's going to be the largest skate structure ever built.
In addition to Danny's world-record attempts, an event held alongside the jump has been planned.
The entire event was announced at press conference at the Hard Rock in Beijing in front of eight Chinese TV stations and roughly 50 members of the Chinese and international press.
Stay tuned for more updates and progress as May 28 draws near.
