Has freeskiing really hit the midwest yet?

I was just at Grafton ski shop here in wisconsin today and they have like no twin tips in. When I really started to look at all the ski shops in wisconsin i realized that nobody here could care less about our skiing. Everyplace that i have looked at is only getting like 3 different pairs of twin tips this season and nobody is carrying line. Last year at little switz the owner ripped the park down mid season becuase of the snowboaders that invaded the hill. he said the place got out of hand because the boaders didnt care about what was happening. Now i here about Marquette getting a kick ass park but how many people are really going to beable to do it? I guess what i am saying is, how many people really care about freeskiing here in the midwest. ther is nobody in my town that is a 'true' freeskier.

Go to Tyrol Basin on any given day, youll see whats up, check out midwestskier.com, or MSO3, Spirit Mtn, shit son. What do you expect anyways, go to a respectable shop.

we are behind the rest of the country but we are not dead, and as to marquette, i rode with some locals there for 2 days and those kids are hardcore and they are good. Hopefully I can come and ride that park at somepoint this winter.

It's my opinion that newschool is a lot more hardcore in the Midwest... so there's less people doing it. You're a lot less apt to find posers, too. It's a small scene that produces an elite core of riders who know how to handle shitty jumps, take on urban rails, and build their own hits when there are none available.

I think the Midwest tends to be a year or two behind the times. Although great sites like this are helping allot. When peeps can see what others are doing it amps the evolution, note the skiing style from last seasons videos compared to this seasons videos.

I work at Laacke and Joy's in Milwaukee and am pretty good friends with the ski buyer for the store. He knows that twin's are real big out west and definitly realizes it's what's up in skiing right now, but in the past few years sales of twin's at our stores have been really poor. It's not so much that the store doesn't see that twin tips are pushing skiing right now, it's that from a buisness standpoint there hasn't been a market for them around here so they have no reason to carry that many of them. Sadly, most of the people I sell to are still middle aged guys with too much money who buy skis like the Pilot 10's that will never use the ski to its ability. I stop in Les Moise everynow and then too and see they have a pretty decent selection of twin tips, but they don't see to be selling that well either. That's my standpoint at least. Maybe it'll get better in a few years when prices come down a little bit, or people start to buy more of them. My 2 cents.

Kamikaze makes a good point, most of the people here are really hardcore cause you have to be. Otherwise there is nothing to do.

ya sad to say that we are about a year behind the cutting edge but things are starting to change. MS03 will be off the hook for sure. Tons of people, Tons of swag, Tons of style. Just off the hook for sure. MidwestSkier.com will be redone soon and be even more of a source of info then it is now. It is a slighly smaller group of guys but we know almost everyone else and we ride together almost everyweekend around the midwest and just live it up.

heres the lowdown on the midwest:
Minnesota - Spirit Mt., Hyland thats it, everywhere else is just old people
Wisconson - Tyrol Basin any other 'resort' just has a bunch of hicks in snowmobile suits and hunting hats
Michigan - Marquette Mt. only place i've skied in Michigan, but it was schweet
ND/SD - HAHAHAHAHAHA suckers.

yea grafton isnt the place for twins. Look around next time when your on the hill and you will only see a couple people on twins. It is a waste for shops around here to spend there money on those. Grafton is also like more into racing stuff for the most part. They had lines last year and like 6 or 7 different pairs last year so i dont know what changed.

I was just up at grafton and they arnt planning on getting lines in this year. For not they have like 2 pairs of getto blasters and some 1080s and one other pair i think. I think the best bet is to just order skis

In the midwest our mountains are so small theres nothing to do other than freeski. I suck though. All the shops around here in mid-michigan carry twins.

We just started to see terrain parks in lower michigan last year. I would have been on one sooner given the chance. I think in time park skiing will be just as big here, cause it's fun as hell.

Freeskiing is alive and well at Tyrol Basin, 30 mins. west of Madison. Depending on how much snow we get, they have had some of the best made terrain that I have been on...west coast included. I patrol there, and yes, people do crazier shit there than a lot of stuff I have seen anwhere else. We have the incidents to prove it.
By the way, the insurance industry is drying up for ski resorts across the country, which means that rates are getting really steep. Get your friends out there and tell your hill that you love the park that is the only reason you ski there...otherwise places will stop spending money on the park insurance.

im from mn and most shops here carry twins but are way too expensive o i just buy off the net but another place in MN is giants thay have a kick ass park and i herd wild spose to get a half pipe and a new terrain park design by some pro snowboarder

at tyrol there are more boarders than newschoolers, but the skiers can kick 90% of the boarders asses, its going off there this year!

Things are changing. I don't know if anybody noticed, but REI carries twins and Lines now. Grafton might not carry this stuff now, but they will someday.

I have lived in Michigan all my life. The skiing here isnt great, and the weather sucks but I still manage to get out and ride. Every time I have been up to Nubs Nob, or out to Alpine Valley(the one in MI)I always see a good amount of guys on twins throwin down. Personally I like big mountain, and backcountry kickers so I dont get to work on that shit much here, but make no mistake there is a definite core of people in the Mid-West that are going off.

ebay its the best way to get good skis. They are cheeper most times and easy to ship and recive. thats were i got my skis cuase unles you get your skis from the hoigards tent sale its way to much money.

there isnt much big mountain but you can normally come up with something to do. We have hit some gravel quaries which is fun cause there are like cliffs. When I was at Marquette there was some stuff, its not much but compared to the Lower Penninsula its really good.

Most ski shops are owned by exracers and such and freeskiers are shunned by the main stream skiing community. They'd shut us down if they could. Just tell their asses to orders some twins.
