The Term Poseur...

Does anyone else think that this term is a load of bullshit? Who are we to tell another that they are a poseur or can't do something because they'll be a 'poseur'? That's bull dude.

No matter how cool something makes you look, you still wouldn't do it if you completely hated it and everything. So therefore, the term poseur is a load because they are doing something they enjoy doing.

I think it is a relevant word, coz there are a shitload of people with all the phatt gears who absolutley totally suck and are just trying to look cool. I don't see it a lot in skiing coz most people snowboard but see it all the time in cycling, both mountain and road. Some little rich kid puke who totally sucks with a $16,000 Cannondale, it sucks mega but what can ya do, there's always gonna be people like that in the world, might as well just get over it. If you truely are core then it's your riding and style that will show the masses, not your gears.

I know the feeling. untill this year I skied on some old thin k2s I thought they were decent, but thats not the point. I would see a kid that was just learning to ski decked out with 1080's, norhtface jacket,top of the line everything. and it was probably only used a few times! he may have skied a lot after that, but I never saw him again. he also drives away in his brand new bmw/ mercedes/whatever it was. he probably never paid for a thing in his life. although I may be jumping to conclusions. but I have also seen this with other sports. a kid wearing $200 soccer cleats who can't do squat. it annoys me that they get all of that stuff without lifting a finger to earn it.

tim just because a kid who isnt that good has a super nice bike doesnt mean hes a poser.. ever heard the term' your only as good as your opponents' well to improve u cant have crappy material.. the term 'poseur' is usually directed to people who talk shit. say they can do something and act a certain way when it is obvious they cant and they arent

i would say like almost 80% of guys on this site are posers. Most of them are gay too, i always get shit when i come on this site, but i am the only one representing. most of you are assholes, and i bet can't even ski. i hate fuckers that call themselves newschoolers and ride on normal skis. Poseur....my friend who spent 700 bucks on a snowboard and rode it twice, yet still tells people he's a snowboarder after 3 year. There, he's spent tonnes of money, and is pretending to ride when he really doesn't.

Yo Cravate, what you said is true BUT, what's the point in having top notch gear if you don't know how to use it. Like with cycling and kayaking if you have something top-of-the-line and are just starting out you are going to make no progress, you have learn before you can get good and you can't have the advantage even with the gear until you know how to make full advantage of you.

I came 2nd in the New Zealand slalom time trials on a pair of rental Atomics that were like 6 years old. I beat guys that are sponsored and who have their parents buy them like 6 pairs of new Volkls every season, it works both ways.

Some of you people are pathetic. The simple explanation is jealousy. Some kid has really nice gear, but sucks, so you think 'waa waa waa..im better, i deserve it more.' Well, tough luck. In this country, If you have more money, you live better. If you disagree, go become a communist. Are you telling me that if you were rich, and realy wanted to get your own skis, you would get some piece of crap, used, sorry excuse for a ski. HELL no. You would buy some decent shit. So, to all of you who can't handle the fact that someone who sucks could have good gear, and some one who is good might not... think about it! Thier not a poser. Thier trying to learn, just like you tried to learn at first, but they are better off than you. Theres no use in being spiteful. Be happy for someone learning your sport who can afford nice stuff.

And by the way, im not saying this because i am some sort of rich newbie. I started with a crappy columbia jacket, used boots that cost me $99, tyrolia sl bindings, and some spy targas. The only decent thing i had were some line skis. I still really suck, but im getting some decent gear this year because i love skiing and am truly into it now. But if i see someone who can barely stand wearing some nice sticks or a pimp jacket, ill be happy for em... i think 'that would be nice if i could have started with that' ... i don't get jealous like half of you do.

And if you don't like my opinion, you can kiss my ass.

Tim, if you start something you know you're going to stick with, it's probably cheaper to not buy ghetto gear. I spent a little extra on my blades 4 years ago even though I had never bladed before. I still use the same blades now. If I bought 'learning blades' it would have been a total waste of money because I would want new ones now. Instead, I'm happy with what I have, and will probably use them for another 4 years.

According to someones post. We should all become communists, and then somehow we will all have a kickass ski settup. sweet!!!

For someone to be a poser, it all depends on the attitude. I will respect someone who has all the fanciest stuff on the hill if he/she is actually into the sport, and pushing themselves, but when someone is just learning to ski/ play soccer/ whatever, the equipment shouldn't matter. A $700 pair of ski boots isn't going to make a beginner skier better than if they are on rentals. and you don't need to be rich to be a poseur. It all depends on the attitude.

If I sat here on NS all day through the winter and talked about skiing I would be a poser. I see a poser as someone who tries to gain the benifits of something, without going through the effort, or just buying their way in.
