While I will preface this by saying that I am much older than many of you, there are a lot of you that need to wake up to the rest of the real world.
I was racing through gates years before many of you were born, and gave it up a lifetime ago. However, what all of you must realize is that while Tanner may be who all of you aspire to be, he runs his mouth and sounds like a total ass sometimes.
I will never take away the guys ski talent: 'HE IS SICK!!' But, he pisses off a lot of people that have been around a lot longer than he has been.
I will give you all another little leson: 'Newspapers are supposed to write articles that make some people mad?!?' That is what newspapers are about, and being able to express your opinion is what America is about.
Rather than write letters to the newspaper saying how much John Meyer's artilce sucked, do something constructive. Write a letter to the editor explaining why his article did not represent the true magnitude and nature of the Freeskiing movement.
I am not just some asshole gate skiier telling you all suck. Your opinion is well founded and that article did paint a bad picture. But if you look at the quotes that came out of Tanner's mouth in the Freeskiing article that was quoted, you will find the same amount of garbage.
Tanner stating that racing would be dead in ten years is like saying that just because BMX came along, road bicycling would end. Get Real!!!
Skiing is skiing, and the more ways we can progress the sport the better it gets. I traded in my GS set up 5 years ago, and am in Josh's shop weekly. But, I still think it is fucking sick that for once we have a Ski Racer from the US who is even competing with the Europeans.
Think about it, put your thoughts together, and write a letter to the editor refuting John Meyers article. That is how you make real change and inform people about your sport. Not by calling people stupid and starting a cult about them.
Then again, the opinion of 27 year old who has been on the mountain since 1981 may not mean much to you.

^^Yet another lesson to be learned: ALL SKI COMPANIES ARE CREATED TO MAKE MONEY!!!! Companies that don't make money go away.
No single ski company, retailer, wholesaler, or sponsor is in existence to give money away without a return. They are all there to make money, and the only way they can survive is to make money. It is the dollars that you give them that allows them to keep going. Whether you work for it, like me and many others of you, or your parents give it to you, if there was no money involved the Ski Industry would not exist.
The best thing you can do to ensure that any 'Ideal' that you believe in continues to exsist is to support it. You can support it by telling others about it, displaying the logo on your gear, or spending the extra $5 to buy from your local shop that cares about you: JIBIJ.
Wether we like it or not, we are going to remain outnumbered on the mountain. (And I don't want that to change!!) The more we sound like uneducated asses, the more articles like the one in the Denver Post will be written.
Stop worrying about what people on the outside think. You know what skiing means to you, and they can never take that away!!

brett-kai is right, just sending a denver post a letter saying that he sucks acomplishis nothing, if somone sits down, and spends the time to make a good well written oppinionated leter, then i think it will make the denver post understand. and hopefuly it will be published then everyone can see how wrong he was, then he will lose all his cretibility with his readers, and isnt that a better thing?
'what?' Lauren every time you ask her a question for the first time!

blah blah blah, i posted this during finals and havent kept up with it enough to rebuttal so i didn't even read what everybody else said after i started getting criticism.
Listen, I believe Tanner is doing awesome things for the industry but yes, he isn't the best spokesperson...he's just the best. not the best at big mountain, etc, but the kid is still a dominant force. That's the reason his voice was taken so seriously by Meyer.
This brings us to Meyer's deficiencies. The guy can't really write well!!! He's not informed and even though his column is nothing more than a glorified op/ed sport piece, he should still have a little more intelligence and commitment to actually look into this 'little corner of the ski industry.' I just think that it's ridiculous that he can get away with mediocre writing and uninformed and uneducated attacks.
