landing on your head...

this is what i always fear, landing on my head and becoming a quadrapeligic forever and not being able to ski, how likely is it that you land on your head and break your neck, eventhough youre wearing a helmet??? cuz fuck i would rather live a life being able to walk rather than attemptng a dspin 900 and killing myself, has any body had any close calls landing on thier head and any tips for how to not break your neck besides being fully commited before you go huck yourself???

i agree, that's the part of the sport that scares me most and keeps me from trying inverts until i go to whistler next summer. it's just not worth breaking your neck, even though i think that would be pretty tough to do. also i don't think a helmet would help much if you land on your head, it would help with brain injuries and the like, but won't protect your neck and back i do'n think.

I remember reading an article here that said breaking your neck is really hard to do.

my advice would be to practice the invert or whatever your trying on a trampoline or of a diving board where the chance for injury is decreased, it would still hurt to land on your back off a diving board but better than off a jump with an icy landing.

i've thought about pulling a backflip a lot, and it seems like for sure i would rotate around enough to avoid landing straight on my head, it'd be stomach flop onto an icy landing (still very painful). my friend just decided to huck a backflip on the last run of the last day of our trip to montana last year, he made it around enough to land flat on his stomache and face, making his lip literally 3 times bigger than normal. painful yes, but he still has full function of all limbs. i don't know though it still scares me, what could happen if everything goes wrong.

Just get on a trampoline and try a flair. I went from not being able to land a frontflip to almost landing flairs, flatspins, mistys and rodeos in 2 hours. Doing a flair is easyer than a backflip for me because I like to know where I am in the air so you can spot the tramp when you are upsidedown. Once you learn flairs you loose your fear. So I'm definitely trying flips this year at blue.

yeah but if you live in ottawa you more than likely dont know what a powder jump is. the boots i think would work in my favour, on something like a backflip the weight from your skis and boots would bring the rest of your body around.

First of all my mom works at a hospital/rehab center with people who have had head, neck, and spinal injuries, so I am always hearing about this. I would like to point out that it is still entirely possible to break your neck on a tramp. Not a likely but still possible. And secondly last year I broke my nose trying a backflip in powder. Go figure.

ive landed just slightly off my head... i tried to tuck up a double bak off a windlip, this was before i could could even consistently do single backs, and i landed at like a 70 degreeeee angle and i didnt break my neck....

yeah i dont tink a helmet would do anything. that scares me also. I would imagine it would be hard to break but Im sure even if it didnt break it could do a lot of dmage and screw you up still

My mom is also a nurse, and she mentioned a snowboarder kid who became a quadripalegic. She doesn't know how it happened, though.

its quite easy to break it... if u like dove off a hair u could easily break ur neeeck... its more the angle u land at then th height u come down from

I landed on my head and got a concussion a while back, that was with a helmet on too. A helmet won't do a thing to stop you breaking your neck, in some cases it could even help you to, you just gotta comit to something and have the balls to finish it off, sometimes you will be unlucky. Jibbing is dangerous man, tkae it easy.

try them on water ramps to get the rotation, then try them on snow. frontflips would be a good place to start, the worst that can happen is landing on ur back. you have to be completely clueless on how to do a flip if u land on ur head in a frontflip.

well i dont know how close i was to dieing but when i was at windells this year at session 7 i was going off the top jump and didnt speen check into the second jump which we called the death jump.......anyways the jump was only like 25feet long and the landing was like 40 feet long and and half pipe was like 20 feet past that and i was doing a flair and ended up doing a flair and a half on my head in the half pipe and knocke myself out with a slite concusion

I have no idea why you would hate helmets. They will save your life dude. Brain damage is definately not something that you want.

Definatly not a good thing, wear a helmet.

I was skiing snowbird one year going of the windlip. did a backflip, however went into a 1 and a half, right on my head, not cool...had a helmet on, but still got knocked out, thank god that was it.........

Man, this post has freaked me out. However, i would like to bring to light the number of times me friends and I have landed on our heads. I have at least five times in the last two years: most into powder, one into sun melted slush only three inches deep. I have never had a full concusion skiingor been knocked out. My friend has probably landed on ihs head more than me. My advice to people who are scared of landing on their heads: don't do backflips. They are the easiest trick to over rotate and to hurt youself on. on a combined effort by my friends and I, we have landed on our heads probably 10 times, gotten severe whiplash, and bruised kidneys all on backflip atempts.

the least dangerous invert i would say is a lincoln loop, and it's the easiest. It is almost impossible to land on your head, you would just drive your shoulder into the ground.

Here a story.

2 years ago i learned to do backflips for the first time. I'd been skiing for 15 years, and figured it was about time. So i learned them first try...and was pissed i didn't try them earlier. I entered into a big air comp at my local mountain...nothing special..just like 10 kids. My backflip X won easily...as the other tricks were 360s and straight airs. That was the last day of the season. I should also mention that i was the first person to do a backflip at my mountain in at least as long as i'd been skiing.

The following year i moved out to banff. After the season FINALLY got underway, i started hearing stories from home. A couple of kids who were at the comp had started doing backflips. The problem was, only a couple of them should have even been attempting them. Little kids who had only skied for a year or 2 were now trying to do them too. I warned my friends that they shouldn't be encouraging everyone to be doing them...they're easy if you know what you're doing, but most of these kids didn't. And sure enough, within 2 weeks i got a phone call from my parents telling me that a guy i knew, had broken his neck snowboarding....attempting a backflip. This was his second year of snowboarding....but had probably been out less then 10 times ever. He was testing out a new snowboard (a 165!), and it was his 3rd run at the jump, out of bounds. He'd hucked it too early, and landed on his head, and rolled right over it. broke c7 and c8. Had he broken c5, he would have been like christopher reeves, a quad on a breather. Fourtunatly he has 80% use of his upper body. He'll never walk again though.

See its shit like that scares me...but then i realize that as long as i know what i'm doing, and i'm confident, i should be ok. I usually only fuck up bad if i second guess myself. If i do that, now i just do a trick i know i can land instead. Skiing is all about progression. The kids at my hill learned it the hard way...most of them have slowed it down after that, and started to learn more of the basic tricks.

As for my buddy, his spirits are high and he's getting better. The health sciences center in winnipeg is actually making a video about his recovery, as it was one of the fastest and most positive recovery's they'd ever seen.

The only trick were you canrt avoid landing on your head is the backflip, on the other, you just twist your shoulder and land on your side.. just like on a tramp.

thats a negative on not hurting yourself doin a lincoln, i fucked my shoulder up for like 2-3 weeks this past season,.....it sucked, but by far fronts are way easier to do then any other invert, but it can be different for everyone, some ppl may learn a dpsin as theyre first invert.........

I'm going to disagree I think that backs are way easier than fronts. You can see your landing the whole way around! Although I used to hit my head on the jump doing backflips when i was first learning them! now that hurts!

I didn't say you couldn't hurt yourself on a loncoln, I've done the same thing you speack of before. However, it is almost impossible to land directly on you head because of the way you are spinning in realtion to the slope.

Lincolns are pretty easy, i've done a bunch of backflips in the pipe and I have never landed on my head with either. Most times if you are ever gonna really mess up and land near your head your instincts help you wiggle out of it. So just make sure you know where you are in the air.

Your never going to get any better if all you do is worry about what can happen to you if you crash. Don't ski if you can't handle the risk of hurting yourself. Just think how sick it will be when you stomp that huge trick off a 40ft table, when you are learning new tricks and you'll be fine.

The only time I got hurt by doing lincoln is when I tried a double and overrotated it and my edge caught on the crud and sent me right in the wood.

i thought it would be a good idea to do a flare at the start of the year at Moonstone on a completly undervert pipe and when i got inverted i paniced cuz i was somewhere over the deck and nowhere close to where i was supposed to be so i stalled out the flip and was dropping right onto my head, i mannaged to squirm around enough to land on my side/leg. Felt like i broke my leg and couldn't walk properly for a week, but i didn't go to the hostipal to see if it was broken, cuz i didn't want to get a cast and not be able to ski.

i almost broke my neck this past year. luckily it was fairly soft snow. damn it hurt. i came down perfectly on my neck and it hurt for weeks. it scared the piss out of me

i almost broke my neck this year. came real close. that was the most scared ive ever been skiing. came down right on my neck. but it didnt stop me. anytime you do an inverted trick...just commite you will be fine. its when you puss out that you get hurt
