I've heard that we were supossed to be getting el nino or something like that this year..
Anyone know what the west coast weather (I'm out by tahoe) is gonna be like this year?

Yeah there is supposed to be a El Nino this year, not nearly as bad as the last one though. It means that this winter is going to be warmer with more precipitation than normal. But for the maountains it might mean a ton of snow, but also some rain.

it should be real good for california nevada Tahoe and Mammoth.

the rockies will also get hit pretty good colorado and of course utah.

not so good if your way north because it throws of the jet stream and drops it causing less storms or something like that to come through oregon washington canada wyoming.

Thats what im told unless someone up north would like to tell us how it was last time we had el nino.

There was an el nino back in 1998...that was the year the rockie got absolutly destroyed by snow. What did baker record?? 112 feet of snow?? Yah...fucking crazy snow.

reaaally......i thought la nina was 2000-2001 which was a terrible winter....sooooooo...what happens to southern bc during el nino..?

i think they are forcasting for colorado to have an 'above average' winter, but by no means are they expecting it to be record breaking. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

yeah its supposed to be very wet and warm in the northwest. that means for people like me who ski at ghetto snoqualmie get to ski on shit snow in the rain, seening how the bottom elevation is 3000ft

being from VT i dont listen to long range forecasts since last year was supposed to be as good as 00-01....definitly was not the case. so fuck em. but hopefully tahoe gets pounded, im heading out there in feb.

Kinda boring of a read but this should answer the northwest questions about El Nino.

Water Year 1998 and 1999 as Surrogates for Effects of Climate Change

To understand the implications of rising temperatures and potentially increased winter precipitation on the PNW water cycle it may be helpful to consider 1998 and 1999 water years. In 1998 one of the strongest El Nino's on record created unusually warm winter temperatures in the PNW. While snow-pack was only a little below normal for the winter due to near normal precipitation, the snow began melting approximately one month earlier than normal and very rapidly due to unusually warm spring conditions. A warm, dry summer followed and the lengthened summer season caused by the early melt created water supply problems in some areas in the late summer. These effects are similar to what we think would be experienced under climate change on average in the summer. Some years would be dryer, some wetter than the average.

As we're all aware, winter 1999 has brought record precipitation to the PNW, and with it problems with flooding and land slides. These kinds of unusually wet winter conditions could be closer to the norm in a changed climate suggested by two of the climate models – although they would be coupled with warmer temperatures, which could cause even greater flooding than has been experienced this year

97-98 was el nino, 98-99 was la nina. very simplified, el nino is better the for the southern US, la nina for the north. but each one is different, some dry, some wet, so you never know how it's really gonna be

El Nino usually means it will be dry. 98 was an exception. I have a bad feeling about this winter especially in Western Canada.

Hey, for the westcoasters. Whether its amazing or bad. Atleast we ski in real mtns with a lot more snow then alot of people. Even if its not great, there will be a few awesome days. And what I learned in univeersity geography was that the super shitty year was an el nino year follwed by lanina the huge year. I remember learning seom shit liek the El nino was so strong it provided dense rain for the next year with below normal temps causing huge snowfalls. Was a while ago so I duno much anymore.

The weather network released it's fall forcast the other day and said that percipitation across canada should be in the 'normal range'.

back in 83 tahoe had so much snow that the base was taller than most the lifts. they had to dig trenches for the lifts to run and other lifts you just went up with your skis sliding up the groomer. if you look at the latest freeze there is a 2 page freezer of clint skiing at alpine meadows. all those fat cliffs you see were completeley covered.
