i need to know wht is the best sliding surface like what to the ski resorts use?

I believe its lexan plastic, like the stuff that you use to make those Nalgene water baottles, but it is really expensive, You can use plexiglass, its not as expensive but it is softer, if you have coping on the side then your edges will slide on that more than the top surface so thats good

yeah have your coping a good half to a quarter inch above your plexi glass or lexan or whatever you use. resorts always do that and it seems to work perfect.

What we do for our boxes that we build is use coated particle board and then use some angle iron for coping, the iron seems to lay fairly flat and helps protect the p-board a little.

anything that slids will work... a sheet of lexan costs hundreds of dollars...

plexi glass is cheap, you can buy that shit at home depot, just use that. its like 3-4 bucks for a small sheet.

ya a small sheet... not a long thin sheet. and to cut plexiglass is like rubbin your dick on sandpaper. You just dont wana do it.. it makes a huge mess, it splinters and it hurts like hell.

^ Same thing happens when you cut lexan. When I was using a circular saw to cut the lexan, it felt like a thousand needles were hitting me in the arms and face because of the chips coming from the lexan. It also cracks REALLY easily, so you gotta be careful.

cutting plexi glass is a piece of cake with a metal cutting blade. if you use a blade with big teeth it shatters it everywhere. if you use a blade with very fine teeth(metal cutting blade) you shouldnt have a problem.

no no,u guys got it all wrong. of course,all of those can work but the best stuff is called Tuff Stuff...its used on skate ramps at our local indoor skatepark..its a mixutre of wood and plastic,the best sliding surface ever

if it's used on the actual skate ramps im gonna have to say that it probabaly isnt the best sliding surface. is it like that synthetic wood they use on decks nowadays? cuz if it is that stuff sucks. me and my friends tryed sliding a big planter made out of that stuff and its so soft. you dont slide very well and your edges catch a lot.

I think he is talking about skatelite, and the planter you hit was probably made out of Trex, two diffrent types of materials....i think it is possible to slide the skatelite. If you look around i bet you could get a 4X8 of it for fairly cheep.

skatelite is expensive too. Just build a rail instead of a box, much more affordable.

na man the coping needs to be only very slightly above the middle. thats how all resorts do it and i can spin on those with no prob

make the metal almost flush with the box, that's how they do it at resorts. and skatelite is really expensive, we're gonna try PVC sheets and see if it's good.

how are u supposed to secure the coping to the wooden frame and what are u using, i just glued plexiglass onto my box which is 18 feet long and 11 inches wide, is it too late for me to add coping?

you dont really have to add coping but it protects the edge of your box top from chipping and cracking. thats why you have to put the coping slightly higher than the plexi or else its useless.

I know that at Blue Mountain we used the plastic that is designed to cover the blades of groomers.

It's really expensive, but it lasts in the cold.

i read in freeskier that the parkmanager of, i think it was keystone, said an inexpensive way to build a box was to go to menards or homedepot and buy a big plastic picknick table, gut the metal out of it and built the sides/supports around the plastic and use that as ur top.

for my box, i some how managed to get my hands on alot of Teflon strips, counter sinked and drilled them side by side into the box, that stuff slides real good
