I didn't see it and I actually didn't hear anything about it until SportsCentre this morning. From what I hear it was horrific, thankfully he survived.

'Doctors said Alex Zanardi's condition was no longer life threatening Monday, two days after the Italian lost both his legs in a gruesome crash.

``The chances are very good that he will make it. His condition is critical, but it is not life threatening,'' said Gert Schroeter, part of a team of physicians that are treating the 34-year-old. ''

It was so sick, he got hitted by another car which (winterwill wil be happy) was going at more then 300 km/h...

It's amazing how safe these cars are considering how fast they go. If I was ever hit like that in a road leagal car, there's no way I'd survive. And Tagliani, what's his status. Wouldn't you almost expect him to rip through the seatbelt and fly over the fence in a collision like that?

I couldn't imagine the pain of having to go through life without legs. We should all be thankful that all of us have the ability to ski.

Those 5-point harnesses can withstand something like 300mph of impact.. it's insane... they do stretch however so they need replacing.

Also, on their cars, the engines are designed to break away from the body and go under the car, and the whole front end is designed to act as a sponge so it absorbs (by breaking) some of the impact. The rest is left up to the 8 (maybe 6) point roll cage and the 5-point harness attached to the specially desgined racing seat.

That car just got hit from the side at 200 mph. There was nothing that the other driver or anyone could have done to make it safer. He made a mistake coming out of the pits, but it's sad that it had to be like this.

I'll check that out.
Most street cars do the same. The body's absorb impact and the engine either drops or shoots out. I'm sure that F1 and indycars are much more effective though.

I coulnd't believe this when I heard it, I haven't seen the crash though. He's probably my favorite driver in CART. It sucks that he lost his legs but he's very fortunate he didn't loose his life. Its amazing how CART cars absorb impact, they pretty much just disintegrate, he had no internal injuries, just a minor concussion and small pelvic fracture. The latest is he is out of the coma and will be released as early as sunday and will be able to walk again on artifial legs.

I used to like Moore. I got to see him in Toronto the last time he raced there before he died.

It's easy to say you'd rather not live without legs now, but you probably wouldn't be so quick to say that if you were in a similar position. I'm pretty sure you'd still be able to ski, but probably couldn't do much more than go down the hill.

Moore kicked ass before he died. He was like 23 or something and beating everyone. And he actually was from North America unlike half of the guys out there now

i saw a dude in new hampshire with no legs, he was sitting in one of those things with teh ski on the bottom, and he was in the halfpipe doing like 2-3 foot airs. pretty cool shit considering his situation

Bumping because this is an inspirational story. The man has been defying what anyone thought he could do for the past 11 years whether continuing his racing career (with hand controls) or just now winning two gold medals in the London paralympics (see picture below). I read his book My Sweetest Victory as a kid and it is quite inspirational as well, and all in all a great book. Maybe I enjoyed it more than others because of being involved with racing and always idolizing Zanardi, especially his classic "The Pass" (Also see below). His next plan? To race the Indy 500 with hand controls. This guy is an inspiration see pictures and stories below.

There are a few teams that are teaming up for the indy 500 next year and trying to get him in a car again for the race. they are probably going to pull it off which is awesome, cant wait to see him back in a car!!

He is a true inspiration, one of my favorites, wish he had a better car when he was in Formula 1 though, maybe would have been more successful. Pick up his book if any of you have time, it is a great read. If you know anything about karting, CRG is one of the biggest chassis in the world, Jonathon Thonon has one multiple world championships in the past few years with them, and I believe they manufacturer a few other chassis including Zanardi chassis (a chassis designed by him). In the book it shows that CRG (called Kali-kart) at the time, was a shit chassis, and that he re-manufactured the chassis himself in his own garage. He might be the sole reason that company is still around, and has won multiple world championships. Shows how versatile this guy was, not just a driver, but so passionate about other things, like paralympics and such.

Looking to get back into racing, its like a KZ2 or something, TaG right now looking to go Rotax maybe. I am not really sure, havent really looked to far into all the new racing series stuff out there. Going to research this winter and get back into it next summer I think.

I raced TaG on the east coast prior to moving to Germany, was 12th in the EKN standings and moving up, shucks probably could have snagged into the top 10 if I didn't leave. Anyhow, rotax is kind of a shit engine, good series, just the carb is WAY to big for the engine, you have to drive super smooth and super careful with the pedal or you'll flood the engine. My favorite race? Supernats in Las Vegas, best race in the world IMO, do it if you can!

Depends on your location. What I mean is that Rotax is a great series, and a relatively cheap engine compared to TaG, but I think its a bitch to drive. I prefer TaG but TaG is only big in certain areas, while rotax is big almost everywhere. If you go to TaG look at three engines, Parilla Leopard, IAME X-30, or Vortex Rok TT. All three engines are very competitive. However they have different power ranges and work better at certain tracks, also maybe look at the Motori 7, the engine isnt that popular, but at some tracks it absolutely kicks ass. Some it is awful, the three engines above work pretty well at almost any track, but they keep adding weight to the Rok TT, making it slower and less competitive, I finally stopped using my Rok TT and switched to Leopard because of that. I tested an X-30 also, It was good, but we never raced it because we never tested and worked with it enough to get to the point where we thought it was competitive. However, Chris Wehrheim and P1 engines seem to have made it work pretty well. I use Comet Engines, and my teammate Robert Bujdoso uses Woltjer. The X-30 is new, and I think can be very fast, we just never got the kinks sorted out (not yet), while P1 did. Look at those three if you go to TaG, they're at the top. Well so is the Sonik TX125, but the engine will be outlawed in WKA by next year, and is already outlawed in SKUSA and most other organizations.
