question for all you filming fanatics.....WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU PUT COMPETITION FOOTAGE, MOSTLY X GAMES STUFF, WHEN WE CAN WATCH IT ON TV ANYTIME WE WANT FOR FREE?
it may save you some dough on shoot time but what the hell? plus competition tricks are lame anways.
peace

What movies are you talking about?
Also, there are a lot of small competitions that are not televised that not a lot of people get to see in person, are these comps 'ok' to film?

no i am not putting down any big time movies or anything because jonny is pretty much in debt from all the backcountry sessioning...but some of the new guys seem to put a lot of comp stuff in the vid. i find it amusing because they try to say their video is so 'creative' and stuff, when anybody can get it. no hard feelings to anyone...just expressing my opinion

I agree with the fact that people do not throw their best/most creative stuff in comps but...
You say that 'anyone' can go get it, but 'anyone' doesn't go get it. These 'new guys' are the ones who get it and, if they are good, put it together in a creative and visually pleasing way. You cant just go out and film a comp and call your footage a movie.

i cant watch a movie that has 85% of the shots from a comp with people wearing bibs. go out there, meet the guys, and go film with them in the park. dont be a bum

Where I live, we don't get to watch hardly ANY competition footage. So most of what I see in these movies is for the first time.
So I like it.

I agree with MDFresh. Here in Europe they never show comp footage, and I can't receive any american channels other than CNN, so I'm glad that there are flicks on the market with comp footage. And I think that watching comps can be really cool, cuz the athletes have to perform at their best and that makes it exciting to watch. But at the end of the day I think that footage from camps, training, the backcountry etc. is cooler than comps, cuz the athletes have the freedom to do crazy stuff.

It's easy to say that comp footage is played out and that it's much cooler to see backcountry stuff or whatever. But, the fact of the matter is that in the east, some of the best terrain is at a comp, and it is there that athletes get a chance to try new stuff. If you go to Tremblant or something in the dead of winter and ride their table tops, you won't see too much experimentation going on because the table tops are blocks of ice. Good luck building a backcountry booter unless you're lucky enough to be skiing one of the three days all year in the east that gets 12'+ of snow.
HOWEVER, if you go to a comp, chances are that if it's run properly that the jump will be shaped to perfection, the landing slope will be ideal, and most importantly, there will be a groomer not more than a stone's throw away ready to churn up that landing like a pillow. It's at times like these where MANY of the eastern athletes that I know progress their skiing. They have no other choice.
I think then that it's pretty obvious that comp footage will always play a big part of any movie. If not for the above reason, then for the simple well-known fact that people put it all on the line for a comp when there's money and pride at stake. It's not the same as when you're just farting through the park at 10 a.m. ...

I think that seeing mickeal pull that 180 tail grab was pretty sweet, it seems like a step in the right direction for competitions but I doubt alot of people will do that sort of thing because most people do comps to win money and with judging thats in place now style dosent matter much.

watching ski movies is atually getting boring. the same old trick. over and over. most companies get the same shoots, so you see that same trick, over and over. movies that have good music and editing like Scandalous, or movies that just have good flow i like to watch. i hate watching Balance, because of the music, and the flow is really boring. the skiing is good tho.

Yo Eric!
did i hear what i thought i heard? wow contests are for sellouts???? you have to be fuckin kidding me. so are you saying mike douglas, vinny dorion, philou p., and all the other top skiers in the world are sell outs? Are you saying the MWAS and other wisconsin skiers are sell outs? The reason i am asking you this is because all of these skiers, if not all the 'real' professional skiers in the world today have competed and/or still do. in fact, these skiers have heart for skiing, they dedicate their lives doing what they love, and what better way to make a few dollars here and there. I am not even sure what a sell out is! maybe your a sellout, maybe i am, i don't think any of us will never know because there isn't a fuckin definition. why don't you shut your mouth and think before you speak!
thanks,
scott kovtun

Ok, this is for those who thinks comp footage do not make a good movies, you almost right, if you just see guys throwing tricks in a comps, you wont love the movie, but if there is nome good music with it, you'll prolly like it.
You can compare the way guys are doiung there tricks off the same jumps, I dont have anything against a movie that is showing different people on different jumps, but I like to see how two different people do the same trick on the same jump.

most PBP are competition footage...like 13 won an award for like best competition footage...The Game had a lot of gravity and xgames and us open..amybe they just dont wanna take the time to film just the skiers, but its easier for them jsut to film it when the skiers HAVE to do it
All times are Eastern (-5)
