i guess ill bring this up again to piss ppl off:
There I was, standing alone. The mob was closing in around me. Hundreds, maybe thousands of malodorous, dirt-encrusted bodies, staggering , eyes glassy, muttering, movements jerky like zombies…where was I? A bad dream? A B-movie on Space? In the pits of Hell?
Well, close on all three counts. I wandered onto the street in the midst of pro-pot rally.
There they were, most of them in their teens or early 20s, many with their hair in dreadlocks, which on white people just looks dirty, unwashed, unthinking…just shambling along, following the staggerer in front of them for direction, and chanting various mantras about legalizing marijuana.
Of all the things to gather in protest for in this world, with racism, war, cruelty to animals, government misspending, child poverty increasing…these people's cause is getting high. And if that right away doesn't prove pot affects your decision-making ability, nothing will.
How do I feel about legalizing marijuana? Quite frankly, I don't use marijuana, never have and can't ever see a desire to do so. I think that anyone who has to use drugs or alcohol to have a good time is a sad and pathetic waste of skin who is usually only amusing to other similarly sad and pathetic losers. And anyone who uses any substance to escape their problems is an idiot - you don't escape, you only avoid, and half the time delaying dealing with problems only compounds them.
That being said, we let people make complete asses of themselves in so many other ways -- just look at Karaoke-- that I doubt we can really stop them from doing it with drugs. And unnecessarily harsh marijuana laws have filled our prisons, jammed our courts and wasted police effort that could be put to greater use.
However, the justifications that most pro-pot people use for legalizing weed are just plain stupid. Like the idea that weed is less dangerous than alcohol - well, there's two responses for that. One, no it isn't, it's just dangerous in different ways. And two, that's like saying a kick in the ass is less harmful than a kick in the yams.
Alcohol abuse may be the single most destructive element in our society. It leads to domestic violence, dissolution of the family unit, sexual assault, traffic fatalities…so saying smoking weed is comparatively less dangerous is hardly persuasive that it's harmless. Plus, the only reason alcohol abuse is more pervasive than weed abuse is that it's more available - because it's legal. Intoxicants are intoxicants...and both stem from the root word 'toxic'.
Hey, you think I'm cool? Of course you do! And do you think I fit in here? With the shiny, happy lobotomy victims who shill for the meaningless tripe we play all day long? They hate my guts here, because I tell it like it is, and I don't kiss anyone's butt. So who would you rather be? Me, or those corporate robots?
No, the only real justification I can see for making weed legal is that it will automatically make it less cool. Let's face it, the only reason kids think weed is cool is because it's illegal, and doing it meshes real well with a teenager's desire for rebellion. Every puff is like giving the finger to the adult culture that surrounds them but won't let them in.
And that's what makes marijuana dangerous. In youth-targeted movies, TV and especially music, smoking weed is presented as the ticket into the cool club. Adults who choose to get high are adults, whom we presume have learned a sense of restraint and responsibility - neither of which are traits you can ascribe to most teenagers, especially the ones who do things just to be cool. Their zeal is untempered by the perspective and sensibility provided by life experience alone. So they do it to belong, to blend in, and frequently, they think that more of a cool thing will make them more cool. So they overdo it.
Not to mention the fact that puberty itself makes a teenager's brain a stew of conflicting and shifting chemicals, none of which is helped by the effects of mind-alerting substances. Bottom line - marijuana is just more dangerous for young people, yet they are the ones it's being pushed on by the supposed forces of 'what's hip'.
So maybe the best way to get teenagers to do things that benefit them instead of hurting them is to make weed legal and homework illegal. That way they'll lose interest in one, and gain interest in the other. And if weed is legal, maybe then these protestors can finally find the time to bathe.
I'm Ed the Sock.
