why skiing is being killed by skiiers

So I worked this last week at a ski sale and noticed several key points as to why skiing may never be as strong as it once was. We all know that snowboarding is more popular than skiing at this point, no matter how much we want to pretend its not. Point #1: The people who are gona sell you skis are old frumpy men and women who consider a good ski day to be one when it ends at 3 pm and and you drink cocktails in a lodge with your friends and talk about your condos and boat in mexico. As a result these people aren't going to attract any one under the age of 35-40. if you look at a snowboard dept. its all gus ina girls between 18-25 wearing t-shirts and drinking red-bull and jolt cola. Point#2: skiing is a lot more expensive than boarding, boots for snowboarding are like 100-200 bucks for skis they range from 250-700 fuckin dollars! bindings are about the same and skis are like 400, usally and boardas are around 300. some do cost mnore but this is a average. point#3: hardly anyone knows what skiing is capable off, its stereotyped by boarders and a lot of skiers as a groomed/mogul/race sport. I know its not but thats how its seen.
sorry this is so long its more of me venting than anything but I just wanna say that we should all do whatever we can to further the spot, not only new tricks but show these people that their is more to skiing than they see.

I agree with your assessment mostly but i think it depends on the store. My store I work at in southern ontario is staffed by young ppl.. only a few old guys. Skiing isnt dead yet and no one better give up the fight. More and more I'm tempting the younguns away from snowboarding and into my little twintip area. Your situation sounds bad but its not that bad everywhere. Good luck

the thing that really hurts skiing is the stereotype that you spoke of. thanks to jonny moseley and others people are drifting away from this belief, but a lot of people still believe that.

after next season there will be a huge explosion. Videos need to go main stream.. which they are. And there will be more good people out there. 1 good skier can bring in 10 more to the sport when they go to buy new stuff after next season.

I work in a shop and i am 19 we have another guy who is 18 who i got to change from snowboarding to skiing last season and the manager is like 24.
We have one old guy which all shops need for that person you were talking about because we need to sell skis.
We also sell snowboards and when ever a customer comes in the always assume that i snowboard untill i start talking about the skis.
There are more snowboarders because it is easier to learn
JUST MY OPINION.
SNOWBOARDERS ARE STARTING TO CONVERT OVER.
SKIING IS MAKING A COMEBACK BIGTIME.

once all our parents and the babyboomers get too old to ski the shops and the sport will change. in about 5-7 years skiing will be a lot more mainstream and quite a few of us will want it to return the way it is today.

I ski Because I love to ski. I never have and never will care about how popular or mainstream it is, because the mountains will always be there whether they have sponsorships or not.

ok, not to be an ass, or piss anyone off, but i find this thread to be most pointless. who cares what people do while or after skiing. just go out and ski. skiing is getting bigger again. but freeride will never be what comes to everyones mind when the word skiing is announced. its just too small of a percentage of all skiers. recreational skiing and ski racing have the biggest percentages...

Well aren't most of going to ski anyway when we are 50 and 60 year olds suffering from major arthritis and osteoperosis, and our bodies will be half metal plated. Shit you're going to love skiing then still, ski groomed runs, and not give a shit about 'image.'

Rediculous, nothing is wrong with skiing. There are many many great things about skiing and it's going to blow up. just because in your town it's all old people selling and buying skis, doesn't mean thats the way it is everywhere. It's fine and there's no need to worry, don't get your pantys in a twist.

the thing you say about all the old people in the sport and how they don't contribute to twin tips and shit... well guess what - they're gonna die soon. so they won't be around to hinder the sport.

You have very good points, but i don't mind being a minorty on the hill, if boarders or other skiers don't know what you are capable of, throw down, and show em what you can do.

Hey everyone the best thing you can do is make sure to get your little bro, sis, neighbor or random stranger hooked on skiing! The numbers of skiers over the years have stayed at a very flat level and when all the baby boomers hit 60+ those numbers are going to drop in a big way. That means more ski areas going out of business. Our ski area's main foucus is bringing in the new skier and turning them in to a passionate one like you. Keep the vids coming and get people fired up on what you can do, but most of all encourage them to do it too. Otherwise it is going to get alot harder to get out there and rip it up. Oh and the reason that ski equip is so much more expensive than snowboard equip is the fact that there are only about a dozen ski manufacturers and 100's of snowboard manufacturers. More ski manufacturers = less $$ you have to spend. Keep pushing for the new shit they will figure it out.

the real question is why do you guys care so much if skiing is mainstream or not. so what if snowboarding is more popular, just look at the facts. snowboarding equipement is much cheaper than ski equipement. snowboarding is much easier to learn. if i didnt live at a mountain i would probebly be a snowboarder based on the fact that it is so much easier to pick up and get good at quick. do you guys really want skiing to go mainstream? i dont think we need any more than the 25,000 people that are already skiing and boarding here on a busy day. skiing could use a little more publicity, but i would rather just be having fun in the park and mountain with my friends, and not thousands of 13 year old L.A.ians who all have k-mart twin-tips and love to roll over all the jumps in the in the park. just my thoughts

I say that skiing doens't even need to be popular. Getting more popular won't make prices go down. All the things that skiers complain about snowboarders now will just be aid about skiers as soon as it becomes popular. All the posers will want to ski eventhough they suck, and everyone will stereotype and say that skiers are just a bunch of posers

I work in a shop too so I get what you're sayin - but the other thing is that its this time of year, when all the old guys who are finally giving up their old straight 215's to move over to 'one of those new super dooper carving skis I read about in Ski Magazine'. Give it about another month when the new stuff is more easily available and watch all the younger guys and girls start to come in to buy the latest twin or pow ski

Ya, I agree, skiing is gay. It's sad to go to the hill and see how gay skiing really is. I mean it's either 50 years old pricks who dislike twin tips, rich business men, or annoying jock racer types.
Or when you see some race coach who thinks he's progressive when he's teaching his whole race team to do 3's off some 10' jump. Ugly ass 3's. Spandex racers are gay. Do racers really see the need to put on spandex just to make themselves look like stupid morons.
Or you gu into a shop and it's like 'fags'. I hate ski shops. Skiing is gay, it's a fact, dont deny it.

give snowboarding another 20-30 years and you'll see old guys on out of date equipment aswell. and for those of you complaining about the old guy working in the ski shop. these are the guys that kept skiing alive at one point. and they probably know a hell of a lot more about fixing/repairing skis than most people on this site. respect them. they do there thing for the love of the sport, the same thing we do. Its just a different part of the same sport.

First off, FUCK SCHOOL, fourth day in and already had 2 hours worth of homework tonight
Now on to the important stuff
I give props to the 80 year old guys who work the shops and hills that go out year after year. Back 40 years ago what they were doing then is like what we are doing now, having fun. there are alot of old people out there who are stuck in their ways but the old ones who can deal with change, still ride, and help you out are the ones who deserve respect.

bah...i like it when snowboarders stereotype and old people think skiing is all about carving. I enjoy the look on peoples face when i blow by them skiing backwards, or stick a cool trick in the park or go bigger then the boarders in the pipe. I like that look. I'm getting it less and less now because people are starting to realize we can do this shit.

i agree with jibs, i like it when boarders or racers are like holy shit when i do somthing sick, but i just ski for the love of it, theres nothing i would rather b doing than hittin a jump and goin huge, even to huge, but i will miss the holy shit face i get sometimes.

I had this problem a year ago too, but boarders will respect skiing when the ysee what we are capable of. I make fun of idiot skiers as much as the boarders do. We dont care anymore what you ride, as long as you can prove you are worthy of respect with style and flair.
Who cares about the old guys in teh shops, let them stay there, I dont care if everyone else skis or not. I kinda liek being a minority, it makes you stand out. Not like all the sheep snowboarders who cant really snowbaord but crowd the park anyways. Its all good to me!

They sold rossi and he didnt even know about the Scratch BC's. Its sad because I could do the job and fucking sell 10 times more skis to kids that are fucking cool. not 30 year old dusch bags.

who cares how many newschoolers there are on the mountain, sure its good to have a few but if there were too many all the parks would be crowded and it would suck1

Park overcrowdedness sucks...but it puts pressure on resorts to build multiple parks, including ones for expert riders.

I think the more popular freeskiing gets the more the sport is going to go down hill. Take skateboarding for example. As soon as Tony Hawk comes out with a video game every single 9 year old in the world is out skateboarding and fucking shit up for those who really love the sport. Just think about...do you want 9 year olds skiing all over your terrain park, fucking shit up, and getting in your way?

I am a skier, I am not killing skiing. i could give two fucks about whether or not it is or stays popular, i'm content with strapping on skis to my feet and having a good time. I dont care whether or not skiing is 'cooler' than snowboarding. I loved skiing just as much when only me and my friends did it as i do now.
forget about what people think for a bit, and remember why you started and the feeling it gives you when you are doing it.(not to mention the feeling the spliff in the woods makes you feel)
skiing is for me, for you, for anyone else who wants to enjoy it. dont be overtaken by the scene, be overtaken by the mountains, the hills, the snow, and the fatty that your inhaling.
whether you are just learning or are the biggest name in the industry, ski for yourself and then skiing will never die. it will always be a part of my life. so whether it dies in your heart or not, i dont care.
