Whistler's park...will it live up?

This is meant to be more a discussion than a debate and I'm not dissing whistler in anyway. This is also intended as more of a question that only Natedawg can truly answer.

Mammoth has such an abundance of sick rails and they keep getting crazier, snow summit is the same. Snow summit has the transfer tables, and mammoth used to have the QP dunno if they still have it. Mammoth has the boxes in the halfpipe on the occasion as does snow summit.

As for the rails in the whistler park, they are very basic. medium rainbow and trap, nice flat to rainbow or vice versa and a few other basic double and single barrel rails. All of the hits are straight booters with a couple hips. Some of the straight booters are beautifully maintained and gigantic, I'll give em props for that. Whistler is for sure one of the sickest places in the world.

But, the question I have is, with all of these other mountains pushing the levels and focusing very much on their park scenes, is whistler playing it safe and relying on marketing of the rest of the mountain and will they ever be known as a newschool mecca like mammoth?? snow summit has also proven it's snowboarding backgrounds. Does whistler even care?

I'm not sure what their strategy is exactly, but I see what you're saying, and I agree. They've been sitting back and watching a LOT! Once again, our budget for this year is minimal, and new features will be few... Could be big company tactics, but I'm not sure. One thing I can say is that I'll be doing my best to make that place as cool as possible this year! I just wish we had a little more support from above...

Well I ride the whistler park and I definatly think its lagging. Sure, its better than a ton of others, and ya ya ya stop complaining and love what we got, I know. But, Like reedy said, the higher lever park is big and very well maintained but compared to the top 4 or 5 parks in N.A. it definatly isn't cutting edga anymore. I think Stu Osborne (park director) or whoever takes the summer off (I am guessing) so the are no creative ideas that they can capitalize on until winter when it is generally to late to built rails, push dirt, ect. By that time they are focused of getting the tables and pipe up. Whistler dropped having a park also, so overall, although I think the park is great, it is not an innovator like the others mentioned. They are trying to play it safe. In my mind, down the road like approx 5or6 years I belive many resorts will start having many 3-4-5 parks all over the mountain. Using some of the very unused green and blue runs that sit idle at soooo many resorts. Parks are too crowded today already so I see that as the future, lets hops Whistler thinks so also!
Sure pencils are crunchy, but then you'd choke and die!

Whistler is definitely fortunate to have one of the best people possible right now (hopefully) natedawg. If anyone will do everything they can to make the park sick, it's him. But, like everything else in the world I guess it's a money issue. What could be done to try and get a bigger budget?? I dunno, I wish I did.

Stu does work through the summer, but you're right about the staff starting too late. That's how we got screwed on the glacier this year. Planning a park takes time. You can't just go up on opening day and expect to have enough time to get ahead of things. The higher ups need to put us on the payroll way before the season begins, so we can come up with ways to make our relatively small budget work best. It's so frustrating! I mean, I do appreciate what we've got, but I just see how it can be so much better, and there's nothing I can do about it! Oh well, maybe this year will be different...

ya, payroll is huge. They have to pony over some green if they want a modern or cutting edge park. But the think these 'higher ups' need is a presentation. They are generally stupid. How many jibbers moved or are moving to Mammoth, Snow Summit, Tahoe, ect because they places have well known and respected innovative parks. Lots. And thats $1200 pass each person. You get 5 or 6 people coming to your resort just cause of the park and there is a lot of cash to build rails ect. They will, eventually figure it out. And boy when they do hold on, cause parks will turn from the pathetic that we have now to amazingly innovative amusment parks with crazy features and great creative ideas built into parks. Cash! Isn't it the answer to all lives problems!!

So nate, is there anyway we can MAKE that early payroll happen and MAKE the new features happen or will they just blow us off?

I have ridden a park built by nate... it will definitley be good. I am so glad they have you in there bro. but yea. haveing a great park isn't that important to them. Paul you said that they would get those few top end pros to move there.... but seriously... they provide so little money and create such an insurance consern that it isn't worth it for them... and they are probibly just gona scam the place any ways. they make soo much more money off of the turists than they do off us. hmm. I don't know how to convince them that it is more important... cuz it really isn't to them. We do have to be thankfull for that pipe... who ever builds that thing knows what they are doing. but yea. The rails are definitely its most lacking feature... we all go to the back country to build our creative jumps any ways... but rails.... that is something whistler really really needs.

mammoths park will be unbelivable this year. we have been working the whole summer and everythings going to be much bigger. 3-4 runs were added to main park o there will be a lot more hits and less congestion, the supa dupa pipe will be insane and the super (18ft) pipe is looking like it will be a worthy substitute while the supa dupa is being worked to perfection. there are also added runs at south park and there will be an all jib run (jibs galore) over in the trees on a pretty private run (not to many people go by there) so it wont be overrun by all the LA LA posers. overall, with mammoth and june combined, there will be over 120 acres of terrain. thats over 5 million square feet of park :)

Hmmm since I am moving to Whistler, i dont really like what I'm hearing. From what I've seen their park looks so good. It might not be innovative but it still looks good, and with a good park and good jumps its still a lot easier to improve and progress. Im not saying you guys out there are ungrateful or anything, but if you look at Lake Louises park then youd see why Id be excited to come out to Whistler. There biggest table was seriously only maybe 20 ft. With unmaintained rails. I hope you guys arent saying that the park isnt worth moving to Whistler for.

In snowboarder they have an article on snowboard parks and the best ones, and i think there was 4 or 5, and Whistler was one of them. Either way im still stoked to move their

bah...i'm starting to wonder why i'm going back to fernie. I love the terrain there..but i could get that at whis and the park too. oh well..next year maybe. Though i'm gonna watch this year to see what happens with their park....if it gets close to the level of what mammoths offering i'll head there......but right now....mammoth for next year is deffinitly something i'm considering. That new 'S' box rail is enough to make me go there..

i dont know much about either, and i would be grateful as shit to ride each park, but it really seems as if mamoth has been working absolutely non stop to make their parks the best, and it looks like its working

ya i think once Mammoth knew they had the best park ever.they knew that other resorts were goin to folow in their direction and start making new and unbelievable features. so once Mammoth knew they were the figure head of innovative park design they stepped it up a level and went balistic in their effort to stay and be the best in terrain park features. i think jibs galore is the best idea because i know that myself and a million of folks could spend a whole day sessioning the metal there.

Kinda weird how intrawest owns both of those ski resorts. But look at it this way...Whistler has awesome terrain anywhere you go...and Mammoth is fairly limited to steeps and cliffs and that sort of stuff, so it kind of makes sense to plug the terrain park scene in the sense that they dont have much natural terrain to deal with. Also the populus that feeds Mammoth is a small mix of pros but a very very very high percentage of 'LA' retards that ski once every 2 years, but buy the latest ski equipment when they go. Whistler on the other hand has a very good percentage of 'locals' and good skiers and tourists that come and stay for a week and arent necessarily looking to impress their fake LA friends when they can jump 2 feet above a table top on the weekend they come up.

Here, I'd be happy with at least one rail like the ones Whistler has. Last year we had a real short shotgun rail. And that was moved around to be gap to rail in other spots but it was broken as well as another one that was only used for a couple of hours when I wasn't there.

I'd be glad if we'd get some bigger tabletops too, I can get maybe 7 feet off the first one, 9 feet of the second, and about 3 feet off the third (tiny) one. I'd also like to see the spine longer and the funbox in a better place. Also, It'd be awesome if the park was longer than 1/4 the run.

But just saying this stuff on here isn't going to help, email, phone, or talk to the people at Whistler or, as was mentioned, Lake Louise to ask them about stuff. I think Mammoth might have more money to spend than Whistler so they can afford to have better insurance so they can make newer and better stunts. The reason for not much stuff here is because insurance, but I confronted the people about park passes and a small park for newbies and they're thinking about it.

ya the town of mammoth has always sucked but the village is under construction right now. the gondola going from town to the mtn will open in dec and the village will be finished and open in the spring. finally somewhere to party and pick up chicks!!!!

It's really sad that whistler is lacking in the rails department. They really don't cost too much to build, they are reusable in upcoming seasons and it seems like they can be shifted around the park with relative ease. It seems the main thing that would hold a big resort like whistler back from having a nice selection of rails would be getting the go ahead from the higher-ups.

The Blackcomb park still has multiple hits that are sick to train on year round, but it pretty much stays the same all year long...

the only thing's I don't understand R why some of the camps don't Donate some of there rails at the end of the season, or why the mountain doesn't take them....

I know that high north threw out a few rails at the end of the season this year...
(they jammed up a trash compactor really good)

And why is the Hut Jump so Small, that jump is so dangerous, Over shooting that jump to the flats happened too often, and that's a wipeout that could end your knees, 4 sure

Yeah the hut jump had an inrun that was waaay too long for the size/length of that jump. So many times last season you would see heli's land in the super park to pick up the casualties. Not a good scene at all.

Just a comment: I'm sure Nate has confirmed this elsewhere but it seems that Whistler could really care less about making their park better. If you listen to all the things that are going on at other resorts it's amazing to me that Whistler isn't doing anything major to spice up the park. Oh well I guess they have their priorities. After all, I was out there all of last season and I hardly went in the park at all cuz there's just so much badass terrain with much softer landings :)

the thing is Whistler can do whatever the fuck they want with the park, because, old skiers and stuck-up snobs will always think its the best, so people are gonna ski there even if they have no park at all. see what im saying?

They will have trouble expanding the park because of all the other people on the mountain; but hopfully they'll upgrade the stuff they have and add some more rails

I would really like to see a park (re)-built on Whistler, there are a bunch of runs off of Emerald that are super wide and would take nicely to a hip or two (cuz we all know you can't build tables anymore)

panaorma in the rockies would have the tightest park ever if them moved it up teh mountain. The reason that it lacks is they use teh worst man-made snow that turns to ice. U don't hit the landings and your done for teh rest of teh day. I saw this little kid just go off like this 4 foot drop and busted his leg cause the little fucker just gets scared and slides dow the jump. That hill has tight rails abd a nice halfpipe. But take a hint. I don't ski ice like some poor east coast sap. rockies is where the powder is and move that park up teh fucking hill to teh powder areas. Peace.

With the way that newschool skiing is going, taking tricks to the big Mountain, maybe whistler has got the right idea. Everyone knows that it has a pretty sick park, do they know that it has almost limitless terrain to be building booters on? Also cliffs, cornices, straightlines, and trees. People in whistler can learn their tricks in it's already great park and take them to it's incredible backcountry. I think a serious park is pretty dope, and definitely important but I don't know if that's where the progression of skiing will take us.

big mountain is important but at the x-games you dont have powder landings...you gotta learn/film tricks in backcountry but be able to consistantly do them in the park (if you compete)...

just to get back to who ever asked why you can't build tables (at whistler)... well you can, but you have to have them enclosed within the limits of a 'park-pass' type area. yay insurance!

btw, does mammoth have a park pass system or is it open to everyone? I wonder who they deal with for insurance.

Mmmmmmm by the way, if you have a sled mammoth's backcountry is pretty fuckin sick. I'd say whistler has it a little bit beat but barely. The progression of the tricks is always gooing to be in the park, but the unique filming and progression of jumps in going to be in the backcountry.

why can mammoth have tables and whistler not if they are owned by the same company and probaly have the same insurance provider? is there a canadian law about it or something...seems a little strange to me. does Blue have tables in their public park if they even have a segregated park area?

they are not owned by the same company! intrawest is mainly a real estate developer and they have barely anything to do with the way mammoth runs the mountain!

ok, yea they're all owned by intrawest, but mammoth is in the states and blue and whistler are in canada. different insurance companies because of different countries. a lot of canadian ski resorts are covered by the same people - and they say no tables over or under a certin size to the public and a bunch of other rules for parks. both blue and whistler did the park pass system last year so they could build a good park with kick ass rails, jumps, and competitions.

blue took complete advantage of this (being the only resort in ontario without having a lot of restrictions on their park - and doing even more this year).

In most american resorts the insurance lets the resorts do whatever with thier park and without having any pass or shit - not sure why, but that's just they way it is.
