The alcohol abuse along with an organization to have the guys back combined with the attitude you can do anything as a young privileged is going to exacerbate things for sure. Stats for sexual assault are similarly terrible on campuses without greek life but if there is greek life its a pretty safe bet their assault stats are gonna be higher.

As far as the connections go, generally they'll help depending on what you want to do. It can't hurt to build a network with kids whose parents own companies/ sit on boards/ have money. You can be successful without it sure but its the same as the argument on going to college or not.

Its important to see a broader picture here. Of course there are a ton of genuinely great people within greek life just like any large grouping of people and of course frats dont just teach guys to sexually assault women. Like @ublowme said, the desirable frats will kick kids out and not give them bids if they're creepy at all towards women. My frat tried to be good about it by having sober people at every party, listing ingredients in the punch, and not allowing outside alcohol to create better and safer environments for women.

A bunch of privileged kids in a drinking club are gonna bring along with them sexist language and egg each other on though. My frat was one of the "good" ones and we still had dudes yelling "objects in 5" before girls showed up to the party among other shit day to day. Even if it was said like a joke its still emblematic of the climate at frats. I can't imagine what its like at a state school with even bigger greek life and party culture. If you can't see the connection between that language and rape culture idk what to tell you.

Frats tend to attract shitty bros who personify some of the worst of our society. We've got a huge problem with sexual assault being committed by young men so of course frats are going to be at the forefront of the problems as formal institutions of young men. Greek life's structure is rooted in old patriarchal gender roles which set up unhealthy social dynamics that add to the problem and they rely on their history to not have to change.

I'd say the majority of frat kids suck in the finance bro kind of way and especially from the viewpoint of NS where a lot of us were the weird kids who just freestyle skied a lot. From that we can infer that members of fraternities (college educated individuals) are also less likely to commit violent crime than members of the general population.

The fraternities and sororities at my school even worked with local charities and volunteered countless hours of their own time to help the community. In my experience they were mostly good people and sure maybe there were a couple bad people but that's true of any demographic. Calling them all rapists is so fucking stupid and removed from reality.
