Thinking back to how absolutely balls to the wall the athletes sent it during this years x-games big air event, imagine how big they will go to secure the olympic gold! I imagine riders like Harlaut and A-Hall has reserved some goods in the trickbag for this event!
Men’s judging seemed a bit inconsistent - there were at least 5 if not 10 runs that were drastically underscored, with that dub 5 being a clean never been done and getting 69 being a prime example - but that was pretty absurd. It was cool to see names I hadn’t really heard before put down some heaters.
Dylan is a decent commentator, but atom’s better. What US stream were y’all getting him on?
The constant mention of World Cups and almost never never X-Games was weird, but I guess the NBC commentators will avoid promoting Disney stuff at the cost of actually contextualizing skiers.
there were some weird scores like mac’s 92 with the whiff. but i do feel like after the first score is on the board the following scores have less and less to do with the trick and more to do with organizing the scoreboard so that the rider ranking is a specific order. not defending any judges, do ur prettiest 18 comp is dumb, but maybe that helps explain the weird variability in scoring.

If you're in the USA, everything is on the peacock, its free if you have a cable sub otherwise pay 5 bucks and you get all the content, cancel after the games are over.
SSteezleMatej quad cork 16 scores a 61. Ridiculous. Landing wasn't the cleanest but these judges are awful.
The judges made it pretty clear that even doing a triple doesn't boost your score, tons of people did really nice dub 18s and outscored most triples, sometimes people get caught up trying to do the big new spin but obviously if he did it cleaner he would've gotten scored better. Its clear that they are docking saftey grabs as well, henrik was the only dude who did a safety grab and got scored well, because he tweaked it. Anyone doing triples with a safety got scored pretty low.
I think it's good the judges are docking straight up meat hucking and safety grabs, matej could have done other tricks and scored better (he might have if he landed anything else), but the format benefits consistency and clean tricks, not most corks/spins.

I think matej’s coach shouldve known that after his xgames quad was scored similarly even when it was cleaner (less flippy however) and suggested something more strategic. So fucking bummed he didnt do as well as we all hoped after all the bs at X

I think we're at the point in progression that its not really that big of a deal that he did a "quad" the judges want conistanty, grabs and clean landings, not the biggest cork/flip combo.

Good points made, but Matej is doing a trick that no one else in the field has done, to my knowledge. I'm not arguing for a winning jump but a 61?! That makes zero sense to me.
All throughout comp skiing history judges have reworded additional corks. The dub revolution was a big deal, and then when trips starting going down in comp, X-games romanticized it like no other. Especially in snowboarding, where Torstein and McMorris were all they could talk about. Now Matej does the first sw quads in comp, and out of nowhere we just decided that we don't care about corks anymore? Who decided this? FIS? Where did the judges make this "pretty clear"?
I'm 100% for rewarding unique grabs over big spins. Let's see buicks, seatbelt, nose grabs, genies, pre-grabs, tweaks, etc. I don't want quads to be the new norm, but again, a 61!? IMO tricks that are different and that no one else can do should be scored highly, whether that's a unique axis, a unique grab, or progressive spins/corks. I could care less if I see another forward dub cork 18 or trip cork 16. Tormod Frostad did a forward trip cork 16 safety and got an 81. Wtf. I don't care how clean it was, we've seen it too many times before.

He could have qualified if he landed 2 tricks, going for your hardest trick in qualies isn't really the best plan, he didn't miss qualifiers because he got scored low on his first trick, he didnt land anything else.
I just rewatched his "quad" and its borderline a triple, the 3rd 'cork' was a wobble. Other than that, he did a saftey grab, was pretty hucked and he almost didn't land it, which is why I'm guessing he got a low score. You don't just get a min score for doing a 'quad'.
He did a 'quad' at xgames, others have done this too, its not a 'new' trick and you shouldn't get rewarded for setting one axis and spinning as fast as you can, the judges clearly want the riders to do in control tricks with creative grabs/rotations and if you don't land perfect you lose points.

Pretty sure there was another random athlete trying quads, maybe im wrong, but that doesn't mean he should get a better score. Execution is so important on these super competitive stages, you don't just get more points cause you did a trick nobody else does, it still has to look good and be executed, which i would argue matej did not execute the trick well which is why he got a low score.
Your argument about the mental part is valid, but that is on the athlete, mental toughness and the ability to block everything out is pretty key for these guys, i doubt matej performed at a lower level because he was thinking about his score on the first run, if you let that bother you, you're not gonna win any events.

This is what I noticed as well. Glad they aren't letting people take it easy on the rails and pretty much skip to the jumps. This is slopestyle, the rails are half of it.
Comparing Su and Max on the rails:
Su:
1. Down Switch BS 270 on 270 off | Clean
2. Shed | Switch (Shifty Tap?) on switch front flip off | Sketchy (Hand drag on landing)
3. Canon | Misty five hand drag | Clean
Max:
1. Down of DFD | FS Hardway 270 on | Clean
2. Down Rail | FS 360 on Pretzel 180 off
3. Cannon | Switch BS 270 on 810 off | Clean
Their tricks on the first feature are comparable (Maxes is harder in my opinion), but max went hard on the second and third features compared to Su.
Also who’s this chick that fucking grew up in USA and going to fucking Stanford but representing China? Fucking traitor. What a dick move. I’m surprised there’s not more backlash on that one.
