Reasons for it going viral.

1. It spanned over multiple states.
2. There was a long ass police encounter that was RECORDED in a very close time frame before she was dead.
3. The “van life blogger” aspect catches many young people’s interest, since many young people fantasize about living that lifestyle themselves.
4. She is a beautiful girl.
5. The guy showed up at home like a weirdo, acting like nothing happened.

It sounds like a very media friendly story that’s not too gruesome of a description yet is relatable to many young people / also has video content to go along with it.

DesertStixYou totally missed the point. We’re not anti-Gabby. We want the same outrage for other missing young girls. You think similar cases don’t involve multiple states, recorded police encounters, attractive people, or questionable behavior by suspects?

safarisamalso to point one: it’s occurring at (or near) the NPS system which typically has BLM, FS, ST land surrounding it. It’s surrounded and happing on federal (public) lands which will inheritly trigger federal involvement (and a response) quicker response.

the gabby situation was by no means normal, and yes there are more horrible things that happen, but the media is unpredictable.

No doubt many situations go untold for strange reasons, but sometimes it’s wether the story is taking place in a area with high crime rates (which people are accustomed to) or simply the media in the area didn’t do a good job at covering it.

Not trying to argue your point that certain stories deserve more light, but there’s tons of gnarlier stories across all races of people that occur on a daily basis

As terrible as these are, I would say they’re definitely not as eye catching / odd as the gabby story. Still strange though ofcourse.

theabortionatorThere's def something that happens in any big news story. It gets big then there's an article and some memes that are like "you're all wrong it's this" and a bunch of people are like yeah fuck that it's this.

I wonder how many people really care that much about any other missing people or just say that when it's a convenient fit.

I still stand by it being absolutely newsworthy. Blown up, probably but idk. Hell I didn't even know she was white or what she looked like when I heard about it. Sure that could def have helped it gain traction but it seems like a lot of people are more willing to shit on people helping to find somebody, because they didn't find everyone.

There are huge discrepancies in what makes the news and doesn't, but I highly doubt some of the biggest people on that take really care about missing people. It just conveniently fits into the "your side is wrong look at my side" that generally pops up with bigger stories.

And a few people in this thread have kinda been assholes about it straight up. So i doubt they care that much.

I just hate that everything that's anything always has to be met with "But what about this person, or this situation".

Idk that's just my take.

DesertStixFor sure, you’re definitely allowed to have your opinion. We’re in agreement about how tragic this is, I’m not taking away from that. And it does deserve news coverage but it was obsessive and excessive in comparison to other news worthy events.

That is 100% a commentary on our media and how it influences society. Not a detractor from how tragic a person losing their life is. And maybe that’s just a separate conversation for another thread…

Essentially to summarize, it’s that most criminal cases are internal race cases (white on white crime or black on black crime etc).

The trend seems to be that media outlets highlight what seems to be selling at the time, and is conflicting itself in this way:

white on white crime - always has been popular for the news

white on black crime - extremely popular currently, and sells well in this political climate.

poc on poc crime - prevalent / high statistics, yet the media doesn’t enjoy showcasing it, due to reinforcing negative stereo types amongst certain communities / people.

If you think about it, if the news showcased all of the black on black crime that happened on a daily basis it could easily incite more racism toward said communities, and a “look at those violent people” attitude.

anyhow in most missing persons / murder cases, they are internal race crimes.

All of these cases should be covered but the media seems to be at odds with itself.

Because you can’t tell me if Gabby petito was black and her boyfriend still white. The story wouldn’t have been 10x more massive.

Right now most people think the cops did the best they could by the law, but if Gabby was a poc there would 100% be massive protests about how the boyfriend got away because of his white privilege.

Let me state that I’m not making any comments about police brutality cases the media covers or denying that it, or hate crimes don’t occur at a large percentage.

What I’ve said above is simply how I believe the media determines what to cover.
