Yes conversations about homophobia should be informed by the people subject to it (gay people) just as any conversation about prejudice / discrimination should be informed by the people subject to it.

I also never said saying something or someone is gay is universally negative. In the context of Stepp's post it was clearly used in a negative connotation. Saying ski racing is gay is very different than saying there are gay ski racers. I said in this context I felt that Steve's joke was homophobic. I also said that I dont think steve is homophobic. But non-homophobic people can accidentally do homophobic things.
This is the extent of energy I will spend on this. So argue away.

As I grew up and realized the unintended consequences and full weight of it all, I simply stopped using the verbiage. Like, it’s not difficult at all. And even though I wasn’t actively sitting around disliking gay people or wishing harm upon them, I totally acknowledge my behavior contributed to a society that marginalizes that community.

Next minute everything is good. And I do think that most people are totally fine with gay people. It will never be 100 percent, same with racism. Since the beginning of time there have been racists and homophobes and there always will be. But there is becoming less and less of them and at this point the vast majority knows that they are assholes. And I think that you can tell racist jokes and homophobic jokes without being a racist or a homophobe.
