Or calling everything gay in general?
I get that steve stept is all about trolling but come on dude. It's 2021. That's the best you got?

skiermanI am gay and this hurt my feelings
BedBugDougI agree with everything you said. I think gay jokes should be fine just like making fun of hetero people should be fine as well. I do not think the joke was creative and its definitely played out and tasteless, but for Christs sake this one was harmless.
On a tangent here, but I think we should just switch to using the words hetero, straight, etc as negative insults when in the past people have used gay, or homo or whatever. That way we still get fun words to call each other AND we get to insult a wide swathe of people based solely on their sexuality. win win
BedBugDougDo you really think that he was trying to call ski-racers uncool in a serious sense. I think at this point we all have some respect for the level of athletes that elite ski racers are. Sure some are douches, turds, and buttholes, but that is the case with new school skiing too. It was simply a joke and some jokes are harmful, I don't think this one was.
mikemacYeah I mean growing up and being a white suburban high schooler there was some horrible shit being said in study hall and the locker room but mostly just for shock value and vulgar one-upsmanship.
growing up and having friends come out and realizing the trauma and verbal abuse that they’ve felt from these locker room jokes.... and having their identity used as a synonym for anything we don’t like.... it’s like ya guys we ARE better than that it is in fact 2021 let’s leave all that shit in 2006 where it belongs....
we gotta uplift each other not hate
pinkcamo1000things have gotten better in the ski community but we have a long way to go in other communities
I work with a bunch of evangelical christians/trump supporters. one of them often makes jokes about lynching gay people and going to highschool athletic events to shoot transgender kids. kinda hard to tell if they're jokes sometimes.
so for everyone who thinks we've conquered homophobia and it's in the past, we definitely haven't
DesertStixUhh where tf do you work lol
pinkcamo1000shit like this is extremely common in the trades. I heard a painter shout the n bomb at the top of his lungs across a jobsite once, and overtly racist/sexist jokes are completely the norm.
unless you live in an extremely liberal city, I guarantee you walk past people whit these types of beliefs every day. the internet is so saturated with liberal media that people forget that conservatives even exist. then an election rolls around and everybody is SHOCKED at how many votes trump/republicans get. there are many circles of society where overtly bigoted beliefs are fully tolerated.
DesertStixNah I wasn’t surprised at the existence of the attitude in our society more the idea that it’s just common in your work place. If I said the N bomb at work I would be terminated immediately and the supervisor who would do it voted for the Donald this past election. Didn’t think it was a political issue more like your contract says you can’t say that lol

pinkcamo1000Maybe it's different in other states and other trades but I didn't sign anything other than basic tax forms when I started work. Up here in Maine shit is extremely loose on residential jobs, not a lot of contract signing going on there, commercial is a little more regulated. Honestly there is such a shortage of masons these days that you could probs be a full blown nazi and as long as you could lay 500 bricks a day people would tolerate it
little1337When I saw the post I was like
theabortionatorDamn, I'm not sure if I went a whole week ever without hearing it in the 3 seasons i worked at my last job.

TheMoostafianAre we talking hard R, white supremacy type of N word, or rapping the lyrics of a song, ends in "A" type of N word?

NoSkillsCrewserious or non-serious you use gay as a derogatory term it's homophobic to do so. I don't think it makes a person homophobic. But the act itself is whether it was meant seriously or not.
NoSkillsCrewThis already happens in the queer community. Lol. I personally don't like it. But yeah "are the straights / hets ok?" is a common joke.
BedBugDougI disagree with your first statement.
Craw_DaddyYeah they actually only did a little more, which is why my characterization of it is pretty accurate. They sang along to a rap song and one of them cracked a joke in which they said the n word in a non derogitory manner. You people acted like they were attending clan meetings and responded by spamming their sponsors. It was fuckin ridiculous and if you participated then you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
NoSkillsCrewDisagreeing with it doesn't really change anything. It's a homophobic statement. Lol.
BedBugDougSo you are the one that decides what is homophobic, this is great news! You should make an extensive list of everything we can't say and post it somewhere. If you did this it would help tremendously because now people who said things that were not meant as an insult to gays or derogatory in any manner would have no defense for their actions! Sorry buddy, if it's on the list it's straight supremacy. And don't stop at straight supremacy, keep going through all the -isms. This would earn you a Nobel Peace Prize.

NoSkillsCrewYes as a gay person I get to choose what is homophobic and what isn't. That's how it works. If I find something homophobic and you don't your shit out of luck. Something being homophobic is a pretty black and white case.
What you are attempting to address is how people react to hearing homophobic statements. If someone calls me "f---ot" and they meant it as a term of endearment and I take as a slur. It's on me to address that with the person who said it and for me to tell them I find that homophobic. It is then their choice what to do with what I told them. I don't really think any of this has anything to do with "straight supremacy" or whatever the fuck that is.
You call something gay as a derogatory term, I as a GAY person find that homophobic. You don't get to decide that. If you are a member of the gay community then this is a different conversation. If you aren't then you it's up to you to listen to me or not. If you choose not to then that's on you, and maybe you should think about that.
theabortionatorYou're pretty cooked dude. It's pretty straightforward, you're just being an ass. Not surprising that the biggest "ermahgerd stop making a big deal out of it" are consistently making a huge deal about this.
Yes it's homphobic, it's pretty straightforward, just because you used to say it more, and hear it more doesn't make it cool. You could say a lot of fucked up stuff at one point.
It's really not that hard. Stop being such a stubborn dick.
NoSkillsCrewYes as a gay person I get to choose what is homophobic and what isn't. That's how it works.
BedBugDougLOL holy shit if I was a member of the gay community this would be a different conversation. My opinion matters more because of the way I identify. How arrogant are you? People that go around bashing gays suck and people like you suck too
Craw_Daddyuhhh no. You're not the arbiter of the English language champ. Society collectively agrees on the definitions of words and the contexts in which certain words are appropriate. Seeing as we're all members of western society, we all get to determine what is and isn't homophobic. And seeing as how we are debating it right now I would say that using "gay" in certain contexts is not exclusively homophobic in the way you have defined it.
theabortionatorEveryone talks about how it isn't a big deal, nobody cares yet everytime it's discussed people like you show up just intentionally being asses.
You understand, you're just trying to be difficult.
At the end of the day you can be an ass if you want to, but stop pretending that this is some weird concept you don't understand.
It's 2021

NoSkillsCrewGay is not an "identification". I do not "identify" as gay. I am gay. I did not choose to be gay.
Yes conversations about homophobia should be informed by the people subject to it (gay people) just as any conversation about prejudice / discrimination should be informed by the people subject to it.
I believe the arrogance goes for you here because you presume to have any frame of reference on the way homophobia affects the gay community and are choosing to say that because you don't think this is offensive I shouldn't be offended.
I also never said saying something or someone is gay is universally negative. In the context of Stepp's post it was clearly used in a negative connotation. Saying ski racing is gay is very different than saying there are gay ski racers. I said in this context I felt that Steve's joke was homophobic. I also said that I dont think steve is homophobic. But non-homophobic people can accidentally do homophobic things
Craw_DaddyI'm offended by "the abortionators" name.
Bended_Toenailwut?
TheMoostafianIf I had a dollar for every time TheAbortionator told us what year it is, well, I'd have like 8 more dollars than I currently do.

TOAST.Cant believe this thread has gone this far.
NoSkillsCrewGay is not an "identification". I do not "identify" as gay. I am gay. I did not choose to be gay.
DesertStixGotta love NS. Dude makes legit post about an offensive tik tok from someone we generally like as a community. Members from the gay community post politely (it’s not their job to teach us this shit) and they get told they’re wrong and OP gets trashed for a lame thread. WOOO
