Didn't we move past the "ski racers are gay" phase a decade or so ago?
BedBugDougI agree with everything you said. I think gay jokes should be fine just like making fun of hetero people should be fine as well. I do not think the joke was creative and its definitely played out and tasteless, but for Christs sake this one was harmless.
On a tangent here, but I think we should just switch to using the words hetero, straight, etc as negative insults when in the past people have used gay, or homo or whatever. That way we still get fun words to call each other AND we get to insult a wide swathe of people based solely on their sexuality. win win

Sure some are douches, turds, and buttholes, but that is the case with new school skiing too. It was simply a joke and some jokes are harmful, I don't think this one was.

Maybe it's different in other states and other trades but I didn't sign anything other than basic tax forms when I started work. Up here in Maine shit is extremely loose on residential jobs, not a lot of contract signing going on there, commercial is a little more regulated. Honestly there is such a shortage of masons these days that you could probs be a full blown nazi and as long as you could lay 500 bricks a day people would tolerate it

Even mtn ops at ski areas. You get those same sort of people.
Hearing racist and homophobic shit was pretty much the daily at the last mtn I worked at.
Also on the subject, when i was back in upstate NY last summer visited some friends, we went put for a few drinks and a couple of girls we were chilling with came back for some beers. We were playing music and rhe one girl was friends with my buddy i guess the other was random. Anyway shes begging to sing a song. Then she sings some song you'd expect at like a white supremacist party/rally or something. We were like woah. Where the fuck did that come from.

The cool thing is that even though there's still bullshit, times are way better than they were even 10 years ago. Being a gay kid now isn't such a big deal most places.
It sucks that usually the people that get mad at somebody saying "he can we not use gay like that" are the same people saying "omg nobody cares" when a pro athlete comes out as gay.
Either they really aren't that ok with it, or they just don't get it. Cool a gay athlete comes out and it doesn't matter at all to you. That's fine, but it's a big fucking deal if you're gay.
The amount of homphobic talk in sports even going back not that far was quiet a bit. Again maybe you don't notice it because it doesn't matter to you, but once again it matters a lot if you're gay.
Having role models to look up to, to keep you going is a big deal. It's easy to get pretty down about it when all you hear is negative shit.
Even if somebody's friend is okay with you saying this or that, it doesn't mean everyone is or needs to be. Also beyond that, sometimes people don't speak up. If everyone at work is syaing some fucked up shit, and you tell them it's not cool. "Oh man stop being so sensitive god"
Some people take things too far on the social justice crusade but it's really not that hard to call things gay. Especially going the whole grindr route.
It's 2021, things change slow, nobody expects everything to just happen, I'm just saying that we could stop saying stuff like that.

Damn, I'm not sure if I went a whole week ever without hearing it in the 3 seasons i worked at my last job.
I think it’s the type of work. When I got hired, I signed a bunch of paperwork and in the packet was most definitely rules of the workplace and that would fall under a fireable offense. Hell, I can technically be fired on the spot for using my cell phone on the job in a non-emergency situation lol

What you are attempting to address is how people react to hearing homophobic statements. If someone calls me "f---ot" and they meant it as a term of endearment and I take as a slur. It's on me to address that with the person who said it and for me to tell them I find that homophobic. It is then their choice what to do with what I told them. I don't really think any of this has anything to do with "straight supremacy" or whatever the fuck that is.

That isn't what you just argued, you said that gay people are the ones who get to define what is homophobic. Are you now trying to argue that a conversation about homophobia can't take place without having a gay person present though? because that's also wrong.
Your definition is just as valid as everyone else's and so, just as you choose to be offended by words I choose to not be offended by them. As an example: I'm offended by "the abortionators" name. It's not cool to make fun of baby murder and I find the act of abortion to be on par with the acts of the Romans who left unwanted newborns to die in the wild of exposure.
