Let me say that while it annoys me that words over time develop into only being recognized as a single definition, that definition may be offensive to some. We could argue until the world stops about how it's all about context and stop being a pussy (cat? Coward? Loser? Soft? Vagina? Skierman?)..catch my drift? But the point that we all struggle to grasp because we've never experienced those situations is that some words are offensive to people regardless of how they are used. If you have a large enough group saying "hey this bothers me" then sure we should probably be decent and say okay we won't say that anymore. Cuz in the end, is it really that difficult to cut slang out of your vocabulary?
Think about growing up in the 90's if any of you did. Fuck half my vocabulary in middle school comprised of retarded, gay, and jew, yet none of them were being referenced in the derogatory fashion that would be prejudicial to those groups. It was just how everyone talked to each other.

As a gay person. Who is in the ski resort industry can confirm that there is still a lot of casual and overt homophobia in the ski industry and community. This joke specifically isn't particularly offensive to me. It's disappointing in as so much as I can be dissapointed in the humor of Steve Stepp. Gay in this context has a clear meaning. Saying it in a joke is homophobic. You can say something racist and say just kidding after doesn't stop what you said form being racist. Intent doesn't really matter here.

People are in this thread going off like it's "just one joke made by a skier" as if there haven't been years of normalized homophobia and "joking" about queerness in skiing, and as if a skier like Steve Stepp doesn't have any influence. Steve Stepp has had sponsors (I don't know if he does now) who utilize his creative content to sell products--that's my understanding of ski industry marketing, at least--through things like Trollin'. It may not be up to Steve to teach his followers about respecting and supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community, but folks with influence should at least not be normalizing homophobia. The fact that making fun of ski racers with "gay jokes" is some inherited "norm" of freeskiing is something that needs to be turned on its head, and it's super weird to see people in this thread defending it for no good reason.

I understand not liking the joke or not liking that he poked fun at the gays, but I don't think this is going to lead to a mass shooting. I agree with everything you said. I think gay jokes should be fine just like making fun of hetero people should be fine as well. I do not think the joke was creative and its definitely played out and tasteless, but for Christs sake this one was harmless.
On a tangent here, but I think we should just switch to using the words hetero, straight, etc as negative insults when in the past people have used gay, or homo or whatever. That way we still get fun words to call each other AND we get to insult a wide swathe of people based solely on their sexuality. win win
