ReturnToMonkeyEver consider getting a kit plane? I helped make a plane in middle/high school and it was super fun and educational
SendyMcSendyfaceSickkk, which ones are ya looking at?
CabbyArrantLooking at a highlander or kit fox. I’m interested to see how things change though when the FAA rolls out the expanded LSA class next year. I can’t get a class 3 medical so I’m limited to LSA
SendyMcSendyfaceHell yeah, I'd love to get my hands on one of those someday. And hopefully the FAA is reasonable when they expand it!
CabbyArrantThe E in ELSA stands for experimental so yes lol.
CabbyArrantI’m a fan of them raising gross weight but I’ve heard they might make it a floating scale based off power index which I’m not a huge fan of especially because I’d like to place like a 180-300hp engine in a 800lb plane for extreme backcountry STOL type flying
ReturnToMonkeyYeah i'm aware but you can still buy them already built like from a previous owner. The club i was a part of ended up selling the plane to a private owner

SendyMcSendyfaceI'd say they're equally dangerous, but way more accidents happen due to pilot error than structural failure. Basically you're way more likely to get killed by being a dumbass than by a canopy or spar failure. There's tons of footage on youtube of guys being total dumbasses with these things, cause they're cheap, and seem pretty easy to most people.
dolanslebensraumDo you think paragliding with a backpack motor is relatively safe on a day with low winds?
ReturnToMonkeyJust looked at these, they seem so awesome!

SendyMcSendyfaceAssuming you take pilot error out of the question, I think its pretty safe. Its not like back in the 70s when dudes were throwing together ultralights out of random shit, modern gear is super well made.

SendyMcSendyfaceSure beats not flying though
Charlie_KellyOnly 4 more years until I can fly again! Lol, sometimes I feel like FAA rules are completely arbitrary.
SendyMcSendyfaceUltralight is just a weight-based classification. Aircraft under 254 pounds are called ultralights, and you don't need a license to fly them. So a hang glider is a type of ultralight.
dolanslebensraumCool. Im thinking about getting a paraglider because it fits in a backpack and no assembly required.
BombogenesisGot hired at an airline today. GGs
SendyMcSendyfaceYo congrats dude! Who ya flying for/what are ya flying?
BombogenesisI’m not sure if I should post it on here, as I have a 13 year track record of being a troll. You can PM me though if you’re that curious haha.
ReturnToMonkeyWhy's that?
Charlie_Kelly“Severe TBI” per FAA, mild per my Doctor. Also had a craniotomy. Even though the guidelines state a loss of consciousness, seizures, or taking of medication disqualify you from getting a medical certificate, and I had none of those, the regional flight surgeon determined I was a risk. They are very cautious with that. I do t have the money to fight it right now so I’m waiting. Still, very arbitrary.
jcaComin at chu live from the cold Continent. Ski season is in full swing here! Couple photos from last week.
saucemastrscottySorry for lurking in an old thread but do u/did u work for Kenn borek? How was/is that seems so sick
jcaYup, coming up on 7 years with Borek.
I've enjoyed my time here, it's definitely not for everyone but it works for me for the time being and has been one hell of a ride!
saucemastrscottyDamn that's so sick, how did u get into ski flying?
SendyMcSendyfacebruh its ns, skiing+flying ofc
saucemastrscottyHahaha facts I was thinking more where and how long he trained for, first ski flying job etc.
jcaI just had a standard CPL, multi IFR and float ratings when I got hired at Borek. First time flying on skis was departing Union Glacier for the South Pole on my first season in Antarctica as an FO on the twin otter.
Charlie_KellyGot diagnosed with post traumatic epilepsy, no more flying for me. Protect your noggins kids.

SendyMcSendyfaceAh fuck dude, that blows. Have you looked into gliders? No medical for those mfs.
ReturnToMonkeyThe worst nightmare. Did you ground yourself as well as faa medicals? If not you could find another way to fly, I'm sure of it.
Charlie_KellyActively thinking about it.
Grounded myself, but FAA already knows about my head injury. I’m taking some time away, it’s kinda scary driving, let alone being back in the air.
