Skinning with normal bindings

there’s a thread on this from 2011 but it doesn’t answer my question. do people really skin without touring bindings? my brother said his buddies did it when he skied saint mary’s glacier and that he’s seen people do it. i just wanna know if it works and if people really have done that

I’ve seen people attempt it and as soon as there’s any sort of pitch you’re doing a herringbone up the slope anyway, because your boots don’t flex enough to allow a natural uphill walking motion like you get with a touring binding. I wouldn’t personally recommend it unless you want to be posted on Instagram and made fun of, and also wouldn’t recommend if you aren’t ready to herringbone up an entire slope

Make sure you walk in the skin track so that it’s nice and packed down for the next guy

St mary's is a great place to spot kooks. We used to drag kegs through the woods and set up sketchy rails in the summer like 12 years ago lol.

Never really found out. They were in ski mode, I crashed and heard a loud pop in one of them. Then when I went to put them into climb mode, the heel piece wouldn't move. We tried holding a lighter to it to see if it was just iced up, but it did nothing. I ended up getting my boot out of it later by using a lot of brute force. Salomon warrantied it and I switched to CAST and Tectons.

I've never heard of this happening to anyone else, so I think it's just random.

I can't imagine a situation where this would be easier/more efficient than just boot packing up.

Just boot pack it or get a touring settup.

Agreed. It sounds miserable, and makes me feel like if you can make one decision this questionable, what other questionable decisions are you making out there.

Oh god both of these would be equally awful. No grip without skins but no motion without touring bindings
