armchair_skierRed is like the apple of cameras. Sure they’re excellent cameras, but all the accessories are proprietary af and overpriced af. Also the 50k just gets you a camera with no lens, monitor, storage and hell it doesn’t even include a charger/battery.
1337The draw for them is that they shoot "raw" video and have beautiful sensors that create amazing footage. I own a RED DSMC2 Gemini 5k which we got for a project that we needed to shoot in really, really low light situations. But now that Black Magic/Canon/Sony are releasing cameras that can record RAW as competition, RED is harder to justify. And ask most Hollywood snobs what they prefer, they'll probably tell you ARRI Alexa/LF is better than RED. It's all preference I think and what you're trying to accomplish with a look.
Yeah, pretty much this. The accessories are stupid overpriced IMO. 2k for a proprietary SSD to store data on? They're glorified m.2 SSDs in a sexy enclosure. People buy them for the name and usually when they have fuck you level budgets that it doesnt matter how much gear costs.
DolanReloadedWhat does raw footage mean? Also, why are some cameras simply cost a fortune like this 1080 p sony?
And why do cameras that look professional like this one only cost 800 bucks?
Is it just about the light sensors? Why hasnt that market become more competitive? Are there alot of patents involved with cameras like red and arri alexas?
also, is a 2000 dollar camera that shoots 8k resolution better than a 100,000 dollar camera that only shoots in 1080p?
What type of camera was teddybearcrisis filmed on?

1337RAW footage is like a RAW photo - you have the ability to change certain parameters of the image (white balance, exposure, ISO) after you have already captured the shot. This makes for massive file sizes but that data allows for great flexibility and (little) compression of the image.
Camera technology is rapidly becoming more affordable. The difference of the two cameras you cited above^ is that the expensive one is a high frame rate (slow motion) camera for live broadcast (it's probably old tech now, but requires certain outputs etc) and the smaller one is a relatively new groundbreaker from a company trying to make a splash.
The market is definitely more competitive and affordable and RED is definitely feeling the squeeze. They're working on the RED KOMODO right now which is a super small and relatively affordable version of their camera system (Rumored around $6-8k). I believe RED has a patent on their REDCode raw codec (the video files) which is incredibly efficient and a pretty broad patent that has proven some challenges for Sony, Canon, Apple from what I've read.
For the $2000 8k camera vs $100,000 1080p camera, I'd say the more expensive camera will probably have more features and perhaps a better look, it all depends on what you're looking for really. Right tool for the job, and it's not the paintbrush you use but the artist that uses it that ultimately makes for the best content. Pro lighting/sound/camera movements will look better than a shitty filmer using even the best camera available.
TBC was filmed on super-16 film IIRC. Film still trumps digital, but it's absurdly expensive.

SuspiciousFishIts crazy how high quality film has always been. Its just recently with the new HDR codecs and 4K that we can actually reproduce the dynamic range and resolution of the old film movies.
If you really want to go budget you can just get a used $500 Canon 7D, install magic lantern and rent some L glass and have a decent setup. You are going to burn through those old school SD cards pretty quick though.

1337The Canon 7D is an old and, quite frankly, terrible camera to use by today's standards. Super poor ISO performance.

ChadThundercockFunny story, these cameras are actually complete pieces of shit. There is little to no difference between the RED camera and an iPhone 3GS in fact, what they did is take an extremely old cell phone camera and then utilize software to zoom in on the pixels. This is then used to market to top film professionals who take contracts with RED and purchase the camera at something what's called Manufacturer's Preference Wholesale which provides the camera at an extremely cheap rate to producers who will advertise the camera on camera. So here's the gimmick - once you see this camera you start to get brainwashed and begin to progress your career until you think you deserve one. Now you are right in there trap, you are just good enough to want to excel your game - but just dumb enough to buy a 50k camera and completely fuck yourself because you know nothing.
