Binding ripped out of ski after 2days

Hey!

I got some pivot 14 duals mounted on brand new chams 117 at a shop "professionally" last week.

After skiing them for 2 days without a lot of action, one heelpiece ripped out of the ski, fortunatly it didnt hit anyone when it went down the hill.

what should i ask the shop which mounted them (without glue) for?

a remount only doesnt sound good to me, as the ski is a lot less worth now to me.

New skis that you can get mounted somewhere else.

A binding rip out can just happen unfortunately. Talk to the shop but if you signed off when you collected them they are pretty covered. See if they will helicoil it for you.

The customer does not sign off on the quality of the mount. They certainly couldn't OK a mount with no glue, since you can't see the glue once the bindings are on. Seriously wtf.

When he took the skis and signed the mount form he signed off on the work done. Glue won’t to be honest make much of a difference. If the bindings were not mounted flush or something like that, you would hope you would notice before you left the shop and not accept the skis. But honestly rip outs can just happen. And he is using a binding with a very small mount footprint. He could try to argue with the shop but he is very unlikely to get new skis unless he can somehow prove the shop is at fault. Best thing I would do is try to get them to help coil for free which they will prob do.

I don't know where OP lives but that's not how U.S. law works.

You're missing the point if you think laws only exist inside courtrooms.

Haha. I have worked in the ski industry for the past 16 years including many years in ski shops. I have heard every complaint bring up court proceedings. Do you know how man advanced their claim, none. It’s just not worth it. Ski shops no how to cover themselves. When you are doing potentially thousands of mounts a season you don’t leave any thing to chance.

Rip outs suck and they happen to everyone. I had to helicoil the back to holes on my pivots after abou 20 days. It happens. But screaming and shouting at a shop won’t help. Go in calm and most shops will offer to help you out usually for free. But you can’t expect new skis unless you can show the shop is at fault which will not e easy.

If the binding had been mounted properly I'd agree, but apparently there was no glue, and if that's the case then it's the shop's fault.

Glue will make very little difference. If it did you would think both heels and both toes would e effected too.

Not all the time no if I’m putting bindings on at home I don’t always have binding glue to hand. It’s only used to help the screw into the hole, it’s not as though it’s holding the screw in or anything.

Thanks for the many answers!

I have worked for years as a ski guide and I know that mistakes happen when mounting bindings... Its just a bummer to have your bindings ripped out after not even 2 days of skiing on a new ski.

Adhesive should always be used to also prevent to seal the holes in the wooden core. (For sure wasnt the problem in my case)

It seems like the screws which were used in the back were to short(binding requires shorter ones front, longer ones back).

I'll go to the shop tomorrow and ask them what they will offer to me.

Ski shoo which "screwed" it up was in west coast usa just so you know

Unfortunately rip outs do happen. But at the same time that ski has a fair amount of metal in it, unless it was the HM version. So a rip out is pretty strange, without seeing the rip out its hard to tell how exactly it failed.

The glue thing is questionable, a lot of times you wouldn’t see the glue even if it was used. But its sole purpose is to seal the holes from water, so if not used and allowed to sit in water for a long time it is possible the mount would be compromised.

Dynastar made a touring version of the cham series called the cham high mountain, don’t remember exactly what years or widths were available but they were built lighter and had a lot less metal.
