I think there is multiple factors feeding into this some of the main ones being:

(niche) Forums for whatever reason are dying, I used to frequent bb.com/misc for ages and it was the biggest forum on the web at one point but even that is dead now.

All the OG posters are gapping/moved on

All the topics get played out, not enough good posters adding interesting content (feeds into the above)

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm right but this is how I feel as to why there ain't many people here as there used to be.

It certainly isn't as active as it was 5+ years ago, but it has picked back up quite a bit in the past year. (I'm talking about NSG primarily)

It's been said before and I'll say it again. All forums are dying. Snowboarding doesn't even have forum like we do. Pinkibike is still doing well but that isn't nearly as niche as Freeskiing.

I wish there were more people on, but I'm just happy this community in general still exists. There have been plenty of opportunities for it to just fade away but those 40 members still on daily keep it alive.

I think the userface is outdated— most people don’t like using more than a few processes to add a comment or browse content; as well as the lack of an accessible UX design. Places like Instagram require little brainpower. UserSub on Imgur is my personal favorite. (:
