BigPurpleSkiSuitThere was a thread on here a bit ago about the mental health of ski bumming. I'm 21 and moved out to salt lake 2 years ago now. Had my year of skiing and working, definitely enjoyed it, but after a year of doing that I went to college and find that moving forward in life is what gives me a sense of fulfillment. When I was 19 I thought I would enjoy skiing and skiing only for 10 years out here. Then I realized what my life would be like in 10 years with an aging body and no career or prospects. I don't know about you, but I want a family someday. This past season I worked 30 hours a week and only took 2 courses to have time to ski on the weekends. It was pretty awesome. The conclusion that thread came to was this:
Would you rather ski more or enjoy skiing more? The two aren't synonymous. I find I enjoy skiing more if I'm also moving forward in life and it gives me something to look forward to every single weekend. I might be a better skier had I ski bummed it up this year, but I'm content with where I'm at. Not the best skier on the mountain, but definitely a good skier. But I completely get the idea of going as hard as you can every day all day.
I think you just need a set of balls and to want it.
I ran a small business and skiied all over the world for 7 years. Summers were rough winters great.
Shit hit the fan I lost everything and got a normal job. But I didn't go full corporate. Work for a European company. Will never get what I had back. BUT tomorrow I sign my full time contract after being hourly. They won't give me a lot of paid vaca. So I will negotiate hard for 2 weeks PLUS the public holidays in Germany when our factory is closed. (Its closed a week after New Years, Mardi Gras some other random days etc.) Thats gonna just open the door to 2-3 trips outside New England every year.
The mighty have fallen. But go to any mountain like Mammoth and there is a 'We Work' in the lodge. Any job where you can work remote is a ski bum job. Any 2nd shift job is a ski bum job. If your self employed/entrepreneur thats a ski bum job. Don't be lazy and don't suck and you don't have this lame ass fucking dilemma people are whining about.
