I know this is the million time this has been asked but I am trying to learn how to ride boxes jumping on sideways and keep busting my ass(sliding foward off). I can do them riding foward but can't stay on when I try sideways, any advice?? Is it best to learn on a box and then move to low rails??

I feel like it is mostly mental because before I go I think about keeping my weight centered, etc. but once I get onto the box I feel like I mentally black out I can't thnk of anything and don't even know what I did, it is really annoying!!!

^try relaxing. come out to the box with a speed your comfortable with and try to ride it out.

i dont know how well this works, but this is how a friend of mine was able to slide boxes. go on straight but once your on, shirt your skis so they are a little sideways and then go back straight. the next time, shift the skis even more until eventually you are able to jump on sideways. and once you are comfy sliding the box and jumping on sideways, just transfer that skill onto low rails, but use a bit more speed for the rails for the balance factor.

Try leaning downhill more, you might be sliding with all your weight on the uphill ski and really digging the edge of the downhill ski into the box which is steering you off the box.

make sure you first get the basics down pat. work on sliding the box straight and remembering how it felt, the more you do it the more comfortable it becomes and you will recognize the feeling. then progress and attempt to hit it and turn 90 in the air to your more comfortable downhill foot, keep about ~60% on your downhill foot, depending on speed, and let your front foot balance you and your back foot as a way of steering, in a sense. just go and hit it about 30 times in one day and concentrate, youll nail it!

first off... when asking for someones advice i think you would have much better luck if you use proper grammar. I had to read your thread 3 times before i could figure out what you were talking about.
Anyways lean forward over your downhill ski. You won't catch an edge on a box trust me. Also commit. I still have problems commiting though so i understand if you are having problems with this. Look at the end of the box.

How can you say 'trust me' when you havent seen the boxes he's sliding?
Maybe there are panels sticking up slightly, or a dent or nick in the metal coping, or it's just plain sticky.

a box is a box, a rail is a rail, just like a jump is a jump, and snow is made out of snow.

dude. just nosepress that box. fuck all the going straight and sideways BS. just stick your tounge in her already and she is gonna love you. Make sure she shaves first though. hairy boxes are the WORST! yuck. then maybe she'll lipslide your rail.
haha. yea i stole most of that from some other pick up line post.
get your feet centered and be confident. and keep trying.

dude, its very possible to catch your front edge on a box. When I was learning to 270 on I did it a bunch.

knee's bent, hands by your knees, get your center of gravity low and comit. Getting low is key, because, that way if you fall it wont hurt as bad because your not coming from as high and the lower your center of gravity the easier it is to balance and its just steezy that way!

ski sideways on ice, you'll get the feeling of it, its just like you slide and can't stop yourself and your legs have to be 'on alert', its like jumping with flat sole shoes on an ice rink tho, you might just slip off.
Gravity sucks

what i did to start getting into boxes/rails was building up a bit of speed on an icy run and throwing the skis sideways like you're doing a hockey stop, but don't dig the edges in, just let it slide. keep your head and shoulders in the fall line as much as possible and just swivel your hips, if you do this, you should be able to go 100ft+ easily, providing you are going pretty quick (not blazing). this way you are looking at where you are going. if you turn your whole body 90 deg., then you will slide tip first off the box.

if I ever see Shane McConkey, I'm going to point at his skis and go 'Dude, they look like waterskis!' just to keep the trend going.

Or you could just get on the box properly and not come off tips first.

Just don't lean back...You are probably jumping on and tilting because of the jump, or think you slide the same way you skid when you stop. Nope. Lean forward...try putting your right hand on your right knee, and push that lead shoulder down...it will sort of get you into the motion of leaning forward where you are supposed to be.
We'll have you dead pretty soon.
