Instagram Takeover - The Decline of Edits

instagram edits are cool just to make in a day or two but its way nicer to actually put work into a "real edit" because you have more stuff to do with editing since you aren't restricted to just a minute and it doesn't get lost in your feed forever. I think ig edits should just be like fun stuff for post a clip or two but if you're gonna put a bunch of effort into it's way more rewarding to make an edit on newschoolers or vimeo or something

it's ridiculous, every kid i film with now will text me like an hour after i get home and ask for shots to post on the gram, instant gratification man

i liked the instagram videos a lot more before, 15 seconds max, give a little tease, maybe show your favorite shot of the day. 1 minute is an edit, nothing "insta" about it.

This season i really held back on posting on insta, saved my clips and put out let the goons in

id say it was much more fulfilling

Im definitely more of a picture poster on the gram. Post the vids on vimeo/ YouTube.

It's just such good exposure for the sponsors (I know that's not what it's all about), since kids these days double tap on literally everything, so it looks really good for any sponsors involved. Also check the views someone like @ralphwelponer gets on a daily basis... crazy

I was just looking at keegan's insta and he has a couple 5 second clips of him skiing but not much else. then when his edits come out, they're so much better because you have waited for them for awhile and you never know what he has in store. definitely more hype to watch edits like those where you don't know what's coming

I figured they did that to move people away from Vine, which eventually killed it. Same thing with stories to compete with Snapchat.

If you only post stuff on instagram and never make edits then that's pretty lame. Personnally I don't always have the time to watch an edit and I like watching short clips sometimes, but I preffered the way it was before instagram.
I didn't think IG would have such an impact on NS, there's barely any edits on here anymore

I post select clips on IG and then mash all my clips from the season into an edit. Also enjoy posting to IG rather than making full edits because as an instructor I barely get time to film.

Its so disappointing when you're watching a fire edit, and then it goes into a bunch of shots you remember seeing a month ago on Instagram. That happens way to much these days.

Yuppp... notice that the big name, true pro skiers don't over post clips. They are too busy stacking shots in the street and backcountry for real film projects. Its the "up and comer" kids that never leave the park and are desperate for sponsors that post 4 instaedits a week of their rail lines.

The exception to that is Henrik... I be lovin the lines he has been posting all winter.

We believe the ease of upload and distribution allowed by Instagram/Facebook is going to leave an opening for people who are more dedicated to their riding and how their fans/friends connect to them as a person and athlete.

We've come to this conclusion using the time tested method of looking at what skateboarding has been doing. Yes skateboarding isn't limited by seasonality and costs like skiing and snowboarding are. But the type of media being consumed by the fans and friends is essentially the same across sports.

The prime example of this is Chris Joslin. Yes he is one of the elite skateboarders so comparing him to most skiers isn't equal but the idea is the same, use your daily activities to show people what you do and and keep your name in their feeds and heads. Joslin puts out heater clips on his gram daily and yet no one is concerned about the quality of his full edits he puts out.

Social posts can definitely create hype around a person or crew but if you want to truly create a lasting connection with your fan base you are going to need to create and offer something with more depth. The people who are able to creatively put together their skiing and personality into an edit will always stand out. We are transitioning from an era where it wasn't easy to share your own media through one where it is almost too easy. The cream always rises to the top so put a little more thought and effort into what you create and ask yourself why you are making an edit/video and how you want your viewers to feel during and after watching.
