Crazy that Cam jumping off the Alewife parking garage is still the craziest urban thing done 3 years later (IMO) Really goes to show how far ahead of the curve Stept was

Send a big wall to rail and you'll see why no one wants to do it anymore. The people skiing urban now are having way more fun and getting more views via instagram than the stept guys ever got. As much as I'd like to see the big urban stuff again it doesn't make much sense for anyone to do it because they can get the same views jibbing a bench. Basically if you want to see big urban stuff now I think you're gonna have to film it yourself.

I'm saying from the perspective of the person trying to make a living off it, yes. That's not the reason why I ski but a lot of pros have to cater to what people will watch so they stay relevant.

i think there's a place for all types of urban skiing. if a certain type of skiing doesn't appeal to you, that's fine, just don't watch it. Also, hitting massive urban features takes a huge toll on the body, so hitting smaller urban features is a more viable option for people who don't problems with their knees or arthritis when they're older.

What about like the x games real ski edits that all the pros put out. LJ threw some pretty crazy urban in his edit last year. Also Level one is still pumping out movies with urban segments that fucking kill it. You just gotta keep your eye out for who’s putting out edits with the style you want to see.

I'm no expert in how skiers get paid but I figured that when you are in a ski movie you get paid by the production company, so unless you have a contract that pays you based on how well it does, you make a fixed dollar value. Now, you can use your instagram followers as an asset for the company, therefore getting you paid again a fixed dollar value. So, essentially you get paid the same way. Instagram isn't paying the skiers, it's still another company but instead of being a production one it's a ski company

Yeah you got what I was trying to say. It's more profitable to film the stuff around where you live rather than flying somewhere across the world to hit the big stuff

It wasn't just Stept. The Level 1 films and PBP films from the golden era all had crazy urban segs with huge spots and huge tricks. Like the segments in Eye Trip and Refresh with Wallisch, Hornbeck, Ahmet in Europe... crazy big spots. All of the urban in Everyday Was A Saturday was the same way, 100% huge spots

It's quite simple. Most skiers that aren't comp skiers aren't super competitive. Notice that cam, nick, Clayton went to waterville academy and Shea was also an academy kid. Meaning they are competitive skiers who didn't just ski for fun and bullshit. They skied hard, were passionate and determined to drop heater segments.
Most kids that film that never competed ski for fun. Dropping huge wall rides and hitting massive rails isn't fun. It's alot of pressure to get the shot and not get hurt. It's physically and mentally tough to do what they did.
Basically most kids these days are just pussies, that being said for good reason. They don't want to get crazy injuries and hurt themselves for shots. You need to understand the dudes filming in stept never made that much money.
Filming a street part is all passion and what your getting is self satisfaction. Your're lucky if you can get any money for filming street, so what your getting out of it is personal. EX. being able to be happy that you filmed a street part and you can say that you put out a part. There isn't much monetary gain.

I noticed a lot of the same spots in Eat the Guts that the Stept guys used to hit (that over-ledge to down flat rail thing, I think Sean Jordan 450'd into, comes to mind) but even they arent touching some of those burly spots Cam and Clayton used to hit

I get the feeling we're seeing the repercussions of just how far the envelope got pushed during skiing's "progression-obsessed" phase. Everything bigger, smoother, more tech, gnarlier. It got so intense that we all loved watching it for entertainment but how many kids watching Cam or Clayton actually thought it looked attainable?
I'll be honest I'm kinda surprised that not even one crew has really filled that niche the same way, but it does make sense to me that we're seeing the goofy, playful, relatable stuff become popular at the same time.

I maintain the thought that someone is going to take "New Wave" big. Someone is going to get bored of making movies of fun flowy lines pushing how "creative" they ski and ramp up the size/gnar. Put in some work and push the envelope a bit. Lots of stuff in Eat the Guts was definitely getting there.

I think this is a misconception. There are still pros that hit really big stuff, like others have mentioned - Level 1 (Russia segment in Habit) and Good Company, X games Real Ski etc. But now there are some other pros that do things differently, which is chill. The other feature of this is that with Instagram and things there is an overload of content where anyone can take a quick video on an iPhone and upload it for the ski world to see. This over saturation of content tends to be more amateur and simply lower risk than the big movie segments we used to wait all season to see.

funeralYo guys, I just want to write post about modernday-urbanskiing. I will be honest, it´s completely bullshit. I think that filming a street segment with shittiest cameras on earth and doing weird ass dance moves without poles looks fucking dumb. When stept stopped filming movies, urban skiing died. They did know what the deal is, big ass rails to walls and real fucking shit. Nowdays when you want to watch fresh segments you see ten guys with skis on jibbing 2 inch high bench. I hope this stupid trend will end soon. And this is just my opinion, what you guys think about this? Peace out and shred in peace!

Yeah man jumping off a bigger thing is really thinking ahead. Next year let’s jump off a parking garage with 5 extra stories. No hate to Cam that shot was sick but how far can you progress with that shit. Instead riders like magnus jump from walls to rails while spinning and you say it’s a step backwards cause he’s wearing track pants while doing it.

I think I understand what you're saying OP. Stept was super visible. Martini and crew pushed the sport for a good number of years, and nobody has really filled that hole the last couple seasons. But it will happen. People said the same thing about big backcountry hits after Ostness moved away, but they returned, in formats like Parker White and Chris Logan's series, and Durtschi and crew and everybody else on the planet going back out to Little Cottonwood last season. Ski movies are dying - they have been for a decade, but urban isn't going anywhere.
