I'd say wait until you get up to Hokkaido, and then buy a setup there. Tokyo has barely any shops, but you should definitely be able to find something in the mountain towns

There are 2 realities you will be facing: Japan has huge import taxes, so every option will be more expensive there than back home. Secondly, the skiing culture in Japan is insanely influenced by race- there is almost no such thing as a professional freeskier in Japan. This means you will see race ski after race ski in the main city shops. As you get closer to the mountains, you might find a few options but don't get your hopes up on having a lot to choose from.

Niseko is full of shops that sell powder skis, Rhythm and 343 probably have the best selection. Wait until you get up there.

That's also in Nagano and he's going alllll the way up to Hokkaido

But yes OP once you get up there is when you will look. Someone in here mentioned Rythimn, that's a decent option but do your pricing research because I found goggles in there marked up over $150 compared to an online price I found.

There's a street near harijoku that consists almost entirely of ski shop. Lots of race and carving gear (considering how much snow they get on average it's unreal how much they froth on bumps.) But there's plenty of touring and freeski gear available. Do a quick Google for tokyo ski shop street and you'll find your way there pretty easily. Still.not amazing prices on current seasons gear (about the same as in au) but there are about 40 shops in one area so you'll definitely find something. Go to aspen sports. The first time I've ever seen ski jumping skis for retail sale on display. Worst comes to worst you can have 3m straight edge pow planks mounted Tele 😂

In Nagano area compass house has a huge range but armada gear is super spendy over there. Rhythm in hakuba and nis is good. I bought a pair of 3 year old rossi s7 with rental bindings for 30000y from inski at niseko a few years ago. Ex demo/rental gear is generally in pretty good nick over there as well due to the depth of snow/lack of rocks. Especially if you're looking at some fatties.

The Japanese are really waking up to powder skiing lately and especially the b/c and touring side of things so every rental shop has a fleet of fat skis. They're all going to have something sitting out the back waiting to be given new life! Tomii's in nozawa onsen has a full range of DPS just reaching the end of their rental cycle..
