CS6 vs Affinity

Whats up dudes. I'm taking a digital practices class in the spring and we use Photoshop and Illustrator. However in the syllabus they said not to get adobe CC because its like a subscription and total waste. We have the programs installed on school computers but it seems silly to limit the use to just school... you know? So I wanna get it for my laptop!

I tried to find CS6 software on Adobe's site and there's only the CC stuff. So like I don't really know if you can still buy CS6? I already have photoshop downloaded but need illustrator. Everything I've found is like a thousand dollars and I'm not really feeling that haha I feel like that can't be right though. I know I can use a torrent but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

The syllabus also suggests getting Affinity designer and photo. I don't have a clue what that is but it's recommended as a substitute. Would I be able to do all the same things with that? And it's only 40 dollars for each Photo and Designer which is great cause I'm broke lmao.

Also, if we have photoshop/illustrator on school computers would I be able to open those files in Affinity? Sorry for all the questions, I'm sure they will be answered the first day of class but I wanna get ahead a little bit. If I'm gonna switch over to Affinity I wanna get familiar with it before I throw myself into a 300 level class haha. Thanks for the help! (:

Your school is fucking retarded btw, im pretty sure students get a very discounted rate on CC subscriptions, id do some research before listening to your shit bag professor.

oh shit, thats true. If I understand this right its $20/month for everything for students. So from Jan-May it would only be like $100. If I wanted to keep it though that would add up pretty fast. I'm not entirely sure if I would have a ton of use for it outside of the class.

the subscription is legit cause you can just turn it off when you dont need it and you get the most updated software as well.

True. I might just sack up and do that. Is it much different than CS6? Like if the class is being taught for people with that would it be relatively similar? Or is it like a completely different program?

Right now it looks like it would be $100 for 5 months. And Affinity is $80 so it's not much more. And I could turn it off during the summer then maybeeee my office manager could reimburse me for the months that I'm working? since that's all I ever really use photoshop for anyways !

You could do this.. And don't blame me if anything goes wrong (don't be stupid) you could torrent/glitch the program (you can get CC from the Adobe website as a trial and crack it to last forever, but it won't update) and have it forever, for free. HOWEVER, I don't recommend doing commercial work with torrented programs, because you can get into legal trouble. Good luck, have fun

Yeahhhh. I don't really wanna do that if I don't have to. I know I that couldd but it's not ideal, you know? Especially since its for school. I thought it was going to be mad expensive because this is how it was stated in my syllabus:

"If you choose to purchase your own software, we recommend
not subscribing to Adobe Creative Cloud (CC), but instead exploring other
alternatives, such as the Affinity products mentioned above. Adobe recently
moved to CC, which is subscription-based licensing model that effectively
triples the cost of ownership over 4 years. We and many other professional
designers and educators find the CC revenue model unacceptable and disempowering,
requiring monthly payments to Adobe at the risk of losing access to editing
your own body of work. The Department of Art will not be upgrading to CC.
Instead, we will continue to use CS6 as we implement suitable alternatives."

But its like 20 dollars a month if I understand correctly lol which isn't bad.

wait, so your school does have the cs6 license. Why don't you get that from them?

I'm almost positive it's only on school computers. They don't have it for our computers or anything.

Adobe was the best decision I have made in my "creative" career yet. The power of Photoshop and Illustrator are insane and help me so much when making graphics and photos.

I would def subscribe to cc. It is expensive but you get so much stuff. I bought it mostly for premier and Photoshop but have ended up using after effects and illustrator a lot as well.

Word!!! My office manager gave me the okay today to subscribe to it and they'll reimburse me for the months where I'm actively using it for business purposes!! Fucking woo! Definitely going with that! Thanks for the help everyone. You guys are rad!

I used the whole student discount thing, and I got ALL the CC programs (photoshop, after effects, lightroom, premiere, ect.) and I got it for $15/mo but it might be different for you cause I'm in Australia. But yeah, adobe programs are good to work with and they offer lots of plug-ins and templates. It's g.

It's a bit different everywhere. U of Utah students get the entire suite for free as long as they are a student, but adobe is based out of utah...

I got the CC at the start of this semester for Preimer because apparently no one wanted to use FCP X and the CC is really freaking awesome. You legit get everything. Like everything. I was bored one day and they have a website one that's super fun to play with. So like you'd get your photoshop, illesutor, + like 30 other programs. And you never need a flash drive or anything it's all up in the cloud yo lol. Which is nice if you're like me and have a Mac Pro at your dorm and MacBook with you. Just gotta log in and all your work is there.

As soon as I started paying for Photoshop and Lightroom, they stopped working well...
At least CC is cheap, $10/month for PS and LR

That is just complete bullshit on their part.

I'd wager to say that the amount I've spent on upgrading my creative suite every new version probably costs me about the same or more then my creative cloud subscription. Without the headache.

Also if you are an actually designer, 50 bucks to enable you to actually do your work isn't that much, at all.
