Why do people hate racers?

Ok, so before I get robbed of all karma, hear me out. I ski race. I also enjoy park, pow, and other assorted fun things. What promoted me to write this thread involves today where a group of guys who were obviously skiing park started to make some snarky comments about my race suit and my hard ear helmet. If these same guys caught me on a different day in the park or the backcountry where I'm not dressed that way, they'd be saying things completely different things. I can't speak for everyone but I can speak for myself. I love racing. I love freesking. I just love to fuckin' ski. So, let's hear it: why do you hate racers? or if you don't, what's your opinion on the subject?

There's no better feeling than showing up all the haters at a ranked event.


Nothing better than a park rat who out-races all the stuck-up 'strictly racing' kids. Expecially if they call you out for being a 'park rat'.

Personally, what i hate about racers is their attitude. It seems like they only ski to win, not to have fun. I Dont have a problem with the sport but with alot of the people in the sport. I dont know what its like for you guys where you live but in my home town, the racers think they own the hill and are very cocky about it. They have no respect for the other people on the hill. For example, once i was waiting in line and it was one of the busiest days out there, then one racer came down from a race, waited beside the line for like 10 mins until all his friends got there, then i was at the front of the line and they cut infront of me (i was at the front of the line), and while cutting infront of me they were stepping on my tips, then when i said "wtf i was in line and you just stepped on my tips" they said "well our bases got messed up to and besides, we have a race to go to, we have prioritys" but there was plenty of time for him to wait in line and get to the front while he was waiting for his friends. Now before i get some people getting pissed at me for what i am saying i just want you guys to know that i am talking about the racers on my hill, i dont know how they act on other hills.

I wish I grew up racing. The guys I ski with in the backcountry, the mountain, and the park all used to race and are much better skiers. They have this effortless style with perfect body positions. I can get down anything they do, but they just look a lot better doing it and don't waste as much energy as I do. They just know how to stand on a ski. Now, granted, they don't race anymore, nor have for a long time.

At the end of the day, as long as you are having fun going down the mountain on snow, then you are alright in my book, as long as you're not a douche, which some racers are. But so are some park kids and powder junkies too.

I raced for like 15 years and coached racing for 3 before committing fully to freeskiing. Some of the kids I raced fis with were the biggest toolbags who acted like they were the shit cuz their parents bought them all the nicest shit and they went to the most expensive ski academy. On the other hand, most of my race friends were super chill and down to earth; we would go ski with the park kids when we had time off training or on pow days. At the mountain i coached at, my race kids could throw bigger and better shit than half the kids who hang out in the park all the time. Honestly it just depends on the person, some people are just assholes no matter where on the mountain they ski. Also racing definitely does give you skills that make you wayyyy more confident/better in the park. Idk, thats just me. We should all get along cuz at the end of the day we're all love skiing

used to not mind racers until they hosted a big regional race comp at my local hill. they would cut through the park, call the park skiers "fags" for absolutely no reason and just in general were really disrespectful towards anyone on the mountain who did not race. not all racers are like that but to those who are, fuck you.

KravtZI ski a pretty big resort in Southern VT often. The race kids kill it. All amazing skiers. Text book definitions...could out ski most "park" kids any day of the week on groomers, trees, powder, etc. I am a ex racer and am a very good skier myself something I pride myself in.

I see / know a bunch of these kids who bring up twin tips also for runs here and there between races, etc. Many of them are really solid park riders.

I would say the average park rider couldnt hit every rail in the park, cant 360, ride switch well, the list goes on. Its VERY obvious of this...go take a few laps through the park and watch other people.


What resort is it, I ski VT and NH too. If you think a racer could beat a park skier at park, then you should be able to beat me in a game of skate.

Its all about your preference. I feel like most large ski resorts keep a good balance of park, and big mountain.

I don't hate racers, at least not the ones around here. In fact I wish I did Racing for a few years, I'd have progressed in technique sooner and faster. I just was put on skis, took an initial lesson, and learned as I've rode over the past decade. Taking those CSIA teaching lessons probably helped me a little though. Still, I'm envious their technique probably still outshines mine.

lots of my friends are racers/ex racers now that we're old. I like them obviously, but you do get a little sick of them talking about "carving the perfect turns" and talking about how their form is far superior. That's the main thing I'd say. Racers are like the perfect children of the hill, while park riders get treated like shit and harassed all day long by lifties (fuck it what am I saying---YELLOW JACKETS)

The original post is good!

But the replies in the thread show separating the two and creating this idea that running gates is something elitist and special is pretty dumb. Very few red names in the thread for a reason...they all would have ran gates at some point growing up if they had the back ground to make it to the point of being somewhat established in the industry.


Im glad I never had to deal with super douche race coaches as a kid and just did it last 2 years in high school after I stopped playing hockey and thankful my HS skiied at Blue Hills which is actually a nice steep hill and not Nashoba which is a flat little bump....and there was snow both those winters. If I have a kid and live more near mountains and their ski kids they would get almost only free ski coaching and instruction before middle/high school age since it doesn't look like much fun those little kid race programs. Too douchey and too much coaching and not enough skiing.

One of my best friends used to race a lot/still does sometimes. He charges harder in the park/pow/anywhere on the mountain than anyone else, and he has a very technical approach and edge awareness that racing definitely gave him. He also hucks some crazy shit, his first day in the park he was throwing 7s and 10s on RACE SKIS. That said the way it is at my home mountain, the race program offered from what I understand is not cheap, add that to suits and equipment + many trips during the winter to Colorado and other places out west is a very large chunk of cash for a family. Plus my home mountain is in the middle of one of the more affluent areas of the county so naturally kids attracted to the "racing scene" do have parents who are a little more well off. Most of the racers I met where pretty nice but the coaches get on my nerves occasionally.

I only hate the ones who make huge turns and act like they own the mountain, don't respect right of way, or have no idea how to ski in the wood.

The last kind are the worst at my mountain, they don their twin tips for a run in the woods and spend forever checking out cliffs and stuff. They're also super obsessed with filming their "dope grabs" in the woods, so they get in the way. Then at the bottom, they take odd their skis and inspect the bottoms for scratches...

Racers think they're the shit cause if you ski race, you're rich and you can't deny it. Since you're rich you're parents spend thousands and thousands of dollars on your gear, coaching, and passes. And obviously whoever spends the most on skiing is the best skiier on the mountain right? Hence the stuck up racer mentality

Really don't see how that changes anything, I mean, if youre a pro racer then of course you'll have more money than a pro park skier, but for the average skier, I don't see how skiing park automatically makes you poorer than racing

It doesn't, kids on NS are for some reason determined to make it seem like racers bully them and are the 1% to their 99%, even though this is really obviously not the case once you take a second to think about it.

I used to be a racer. I loved it, and it gave me an excellent skiing technique, but I quit for a serious reason. Since I was a little kid my favorite part of skiing was the freedom. No rules, no boundaries, no one telling me that I was doing it wrong. It was the main thing that separated my love for it compared to team sports.

So when I joined racing, the rules it enforced killed my love for skiing, so I quit. Park skiing seemed more fun, down-to-earth people and no rules, just sending it for the boys.

Not true. I was actually pretty decent. But all the kids on the team were legitimately making fun of me cause I had twenties and wore my goggles under my helmet. Not all racers are bad. I have racer friends. Just a lo of them are jerks.
