S.J.WYou're going to link John Oliver and use that as your source for mainstream America laughing at Justin Trudeau when pretty much John Oliver told everyone not to vote for stephan Harper???
cobra_commanderI Never said mainstream
I Never said he was endorsing Harper.
He still made fun of mini Trudeau
Harper did a lot of good for CA, one of the things I don't like about most parlementry systems is the lack of term limits. Time for anew PM.
Turner.Again? We're trading at like 75 fucking cents.
You're wrong about the international player idea too. My biggest frustration with Harper's foreign policy was the futility of it. No one gives a shit about Canada on the international stage. We hype ourselves here at home, and project the image of having a strong voice internationally but the fact is we're never leaving America's shadow. I've seen this demonstrated in poli-sci courses where international students are vastly unaware of Canada's existence. They aren't ignorant, our name just don't exactly ring out. Given that ultimate insignificance, the direction that Harper pushed our country (i.e. more interventionist, more combative - see Libya, ISIS bombing campaigns) wasn't new or independent, we were just tagging along on American missions. That's bullshit, imo. Canada's role, given the real weight behind her punches, should be diplomatic and secondary.
Mr.BishopI mean I'm with you bigtime on the participation in military missions and just being recognized for our Oil and letting rich people run the country to get richer.
The Canada that I like doesn't care as much about foreign investments and military power as it does about taking care of people and quality, diplomatic foreign policy. We don't go to war - we talk it out.
This is why for so long it was safe to be a Canadian abroad. We weren't a power, didn't want to be and just wanted to genuinely help.
I'm all for this. Even if it affects our position as a business leader, even if our currency drops to 1/2 of USD... even if we run up deficits. Liberals are pretty left on the world stage and so am I. I'm sure they're right enough that fiscal policy will be fine, as many Liberal governments in the past have had a nice balance between hippie vibes and fiscal responsibility.
S.J.WDon't worry about the libs running a deficit. The money raised from legal weed is gonna make Canada rich as fuck. And we're gonna get hella stoned up in this bitch
shibbyThis is such a dumb argument. When will Trudeau even get that much face time with Putin, even Obama only met him for like 10 seconds? Besides it's international diplomacy not school yard bullying like Putin, Bibi, or wacko conservative/GOPers will have you believe. You think a man who rejuvenated a decimated party and LEAD them to a strong majority isn't a good leader? The only one who had the balls to put shit like deficit spending and legal ganja on the table. Are you dense? This comment reeks of "he's just not ready, nice hair tho" dummy con catch phrases.
I for one am happy we have a fresh, young face who isn't some jaded jackass lawyer as our new prime minister, and I didn't even vote for him.
plyswthsqrrls"rejuvinated a decimated party," get real. The liberals have and will always be the second party in Canada, alongside the Cons. Ignatieff was just that terrible of a leader that he ran their popularity into the ground for ONE election.
Trudeau did not win this election, he did not LEAD the Liberals to a strong majority. Everyone in Canada voted against Harper, not for Trudeau. Or did you miss all that #anyonebutharper bullshit going around? Trudeau was on the winning end of right place, right time. He has never had to lead a party, let alone a country through any form of adversity. Literally the only place his popularity could go from the Ignatieff garbage was up. The man is a fucking high school teacher for fuck's sake, he only "got into" politics in what, 2006-07?
Am I saying he'll be a disaster? No. All I'm saying is this guy has no idea what he's in for. Hasn't even taken office yet and he's already making all of these "moves" which he has no right to make yet.
And, let's be fucking honest, it takes zero balls to talk about legal ganja these days. It's pretty much a guarantee to happen, and no one really gives a fuck except for the burnouts who are stoked they won't need to hide their pot from the cops anymore. Not an election issue.
But sure dude, be blindly excited about what this "fresh, young face" will do for you. Hell, he hasn't even taken office and he's ended combat operations in the middle-east, what a fucking boss!
I'm going to maintain my skepticism until he proves me wrong. I hope he does, but I'm not holding my breath
VinnieFyou're only half right on this.
True that the Liberals have and always will be (for the foreseeable future) Canada's natural ruling party.
No, Ignatieff did not just lead the party into the ground for 1 election. It started with the Sponsorship Scandal and the party just slowly got eaten away starting in 2004.
It finally took over a decade for the Liberals to get back to their usual popular support, and it happened to coincide with Trudeau becoming leader. Not because the party all of a sudden became what people wanted again, but because of the name 'Trudeau' leadership that wasn't associated with corruption.
Now, if you actually paid attention to the past 3 months in politics, you'll see that Trudeau was not at all just "right place, right time" but actually did lead the Liberals to a victory. If he was not a strong enough leader this election would have eaten him up and the Liberals could easily have been in 3rd again. They were even polling in distant 3rd for the first while of the election.
The largest helping hand he had was that Quebec is full of bigots and racists. Otherwise he lead the party very well (obviously with the help of a huge team of people).
I'm sick of typing so I'll just leave point form:
- he has more political experience as an MP than many other PM's had when elected
- he absolutely knows what he's in for, and even if he didn't, with a team like his he doesn't need to know.
-he lead the Liberals from a 3rd place to a 1st place. that is absolutely leadership
-he hasn't yet done anything he's not allowed to yet.
I'm not that huge a fan of Trudeau, but fuck, you played right into the Conservatives "just not ready" advertising and ate it all up.
plyswthsqrrlsclearly we are just on different ends of the spectrum here, and no amount of arguing will change the other's mind.
everything we both said in our posts is easily refutable depending on your political lens, so I'll just say plainly that I disagree with you. I respect your viewpoint and 100% see where you're coming from, I just disagree.
I'm wholeheartedly convinced this election was just about everyone wanting "not Harper" (who had significantly more MP experience before he took office than Trudeau, but that's besides the point) and not wanting Trudeau. This can be debated forever, but I'd really rather not.
Agree to disagree, but I respect your opinion and your viewpoint
