FrenchFryThoughts on our new Prime minister?
.MASSHOLE.Can someone explain to an American what the change really indicates? What policies are going to be changed, where does he lie on our political spectrum, etc.

RusticlesJust pumped it was him not Mulcair, however nervously interested in what the future holds, hopefully he puts some form of effort into the west. Most people out here are being quite the drama queens about it. haha
Kinda sucks loosing the child benefit with kid #2 on the way but I guess I don't need it, was going to buy a new sled or an SUV with it anyways LOL.
My wife had a good point, she's concerned that as a young family man he will not be as involved as someone who's family has matured.

californiagrownOrrrrr he'll be a shitty father like 99% of the uber successful businessman fathers out there.
What is the likelihood the guy actually can implement change and not get gridlocked with legislators castrating his programs?
Mod_Daneif you know canadian politics, you know his dad.
If you know his dad, you know that in any scenario Trudeau will have at least someone with a level head telling him what to do. It was time for a change, and if he runs with that I honestly don't think implementing it will be that hard. Canada got pretty fucked up in the past few years, somethings not working and I would rather people move on from a harper mindset.

RusticlesMaybe I missed something, but how did it get so fucked up? Maybe it's just my white privledge showing but the last ten years have been pretty damn great personally. Not saying I expect Trudeau to fuck it all up but I definitely don't think a ton of change was needed, But that's how democracy works, the majority didn't like the way things were going.

VinnieFSame situation as Harper when he was elected. Young family man. (Despite Trudeau being 43 and Harper being 47 at the time)
Did Harper being a young family man make him a worse PM?
J.D.Trudeau isn't "not ready" to be PM because he's young, he's "not ready" because he's not a very smart dude, on the whole.
KazabazuaHe just became Prime Minister - Trust me, he's a smart dude. I don't think that is why he was elected though, I think the Canadian people wanted someone with compassion which I believe he has.

KazabazuaI agree with a lot of Trudeau's platform however I strongly disagree with bringing back door to door delivery - It's a dumb move that will end up costing taxpayers around $1 Billion a year because the Gov't will have to bail out Canada Post once again. All of that money could be used so much better elsewhere.

KazabazuaHe definitely gives off a bit of a gaper vibe.
cobra_commanderEven American Liberal TV was making fun of him for not being very smart.

FROGGINBULLFISHbeing smart has nothing to do with being a good politician. eg. america elected clinton then george dubya back to back

J.D.The guy who just won Peter MacKay's old seat in Central Nova should really be considered as a future PM in ten years or so. Dude's name is Sean Fraser. Wish he was in charge of the show right now.
will_powderHe was fucking the environment, parks canada, libraries, archives, museums, basically any arts based occupation, the CBC, minority rights, refugees, missing and murdered Aboriginal women.
Yeah the Cons will keep taxes low, but who cares? I want to live in a country that doesn't just care about the bottom dollar, I'm sick of living in a country where the environment and life enriching programs such as the arts and parks get tossed out the door in favour of corporate interests, and I'm more than willing to pay a few extra tax dollars to get back that sense of pride.
Canada used to be a respected country in the world, Harper shit the bed on that front.
RusticlesDid your Canada actually get fucked or are you just choked over posts you've seen on social media?
Mine hasn't changed in 20+ years. the same outdoors, the same environment I've enjoyed are exactly the same as they've been since I can remember.
Harper did some questionable things, but they didn't make Canada not respected.

msewardhas Trudeau done anything to warrant being called not smart? or does everyone still have their panties in a bunch because he has had fun in his lifetime and was a teacher and not a economist or lawyer before becoming an MP?
he ran a smart campaign, seems to have ambition for real changes, he's willing to take risks to make these changes and to top that pulled of an impressive victory, lead the liberal party from 39 seats in the house to 175.
nice hair and famous daddy can go a long way, but not that long.
guy deserves some credit.

KazabazuaWell said - I think we're still a pretty well respected country though, four years of bad politics doesn't change that.

plyswthsqrrlsVoted Conservative, super unsure about Trudeau as a leader. The though of that guy sitting at the same table as Putin is absolutely terrifying, he will be eaten alive.
That said, the Liberal platform does have some really solid positives to go along with a whole bunch of "who gives a shit, this will never happen" parts.
All in all: disappointed with the result, curious to see what happens, trying to reserve judgement as best I can

cobra_commanderOn the international stage Canada gained a lot of respect over the last ten years. You know the international stage that doesn't really give a fuck about how many Syrians you let into your country or if you post street signs in the native tongue of the First Nations, or that other silly shit you all would like to apologize for.
Canada became much more of an international player and gained a lot of respect in the last ten years. Industry generally grew, folks had jobs, international trade increased and Canada actually started to matter outside of NA. Oil had a big part in that for sure, as did a bunch of Hungry Chinese people. No one misses your gay arts - like Justin Beiber, or a library of Inuit books. And minorities still have all the same rights as other Canadians.
Whatever, I can't wait for your currency to be worth fuck all again and I can head north to ski on the cheap.
Turner.Again? We're trading at like 75 fucking cents.
You're wrong about the international player idea too. My biggest frustration with Harper's foreign policy was the futility of it. No one gives a shit about Canada on the international stage. We hype ourselves here at home, and project the image of having a strong voice internationally but the fact is we're never leaving America's shadow. I've seen this demonstrated in poli-sci courses where international students are vastly unaware of Canada's existence. They aren't ignorant, our name just don't exactly ring out. Given that ultimate insignificance, the direction that Harper pushed our country (i.e. more interventionist, more combative - see Libya, ISIS bombing campaigns) wasn't new or independent, we were just tagging along on American missions. That's bullshit, imo. Canada's role, given the real weight behind her punches, should be diplomatic and secondary.
