Photography or Basic Video next semester?

Turns out I'm really ahead and only have one required class next semester so I'm trying to figure out what electives I want to take.

I need to fulfill my arts credit. I fucking suck at traditional art. But we have photo and video classes! I would take both if they weren't scheduled at the same time, so NS I need your opinion! Since it'll be the spring semester that gives me the chance to do some projects on skiing, hopefully.

I don't have much experience with either but it's one of those things I would like to know more about! I already know how to use photoshop/illustrator pretty well so I'm kind of leaning towards basic video since the only program I've ever used is imovie. But at the same time I don't think I would have a clue how to approach any kind of video project that wouldn't be like an edit. So I dont know what to do.

Do I play it safe and take photography or try to learn something new with basic video?

id take photography, it'll probably be more fun than the video class..and give you the excuse to buy a nice camera. Plus you'll have the skills to make a nice exposure for years to come.

That being said, i absolutely hated my photography class. It took the fun out of taking pics for me..but you may be different. Regardless photog gets my vote

Tbh you probably won't be able to do anything on skiing in either class. The classes are about film and photography as art forms, not action sports. I've taken film classes and you'd surprised how tedious and difficult making a film actually is, but I bet a photog class isn't any different.

Yeah you're right. I didn't really think that through. I had a friend recommend basic video because he got to make three or four edits in it but that professor also retired so it could be completely different now.

idk it might be worth trying tho just cause you will get more comfortable with filming and real editing software which will help with skiing stuff.

I got really into film photography because of it but for the majority of the semester it was pretty tough and time intensive. Looking back I would still have taken it because it truly is a remarkable skill to learn. PM me if you want specifics.

Photo. I think editing photos is way less work than editing videos and if it's not your major then there's no point exerting some extreme amount of effort into it. Enjoy your not too busy semester instead of trying to edit a video with groups of kids who don't know anything about computers or video.

That's true. I don't really want to work with other people. I'm gonna be skiing a lot and don't want to have to organize my time around other people.

That's a great camera to start out with. You might want to upgrade sometime in the future but that's perfect for you. #mom'st3i

Do photo first because it will teach you the settings and get you well versed with the camera. Then do video in another semester so you can focus on the composition/editing instead of having to learn the settings, and composition, and editing all at the same time.

T3i is great to start, by the time you grow out of it you will know what you want so don't worry about that.

I probably wouldn't get the chance to take it tbh. Im on a 5 year track for an MBA so after this year my schedule is gonna be pretty packed. But that's always something I can learn on my own if I wanted to! Especially if I can understand the basics from photo!

If it's possible, I might just email the basic vid instructor and ask him more about the class and if it would benefit me. I could just take a typical art or music class but I honestly can't see myself ever using that stuff. I'm paying money to take these classes so I wanna get the most out of it, ya know?

Thanks everyone for giving me some dope insight. You guys are rad (: I'm leaning a lot towards photo right now.

I feel like film basics would be a lot of learning about esiting software. Thatll be dope if its something powerful and not windows movie maker

I thought about this too. I know for classes you get free downloads of software. So if I got a free download of like premier(or whatever those fancy programs are) that would be dope.

That would be slick, especially cuz you actually learn how to use it. I have a "free" version of final cut pro and have to google pretty much anything i try to do.

Find someone taking the video class and see what kind of gear they're using. If they have cool gear take that class. Pretty much what I go by. Then again, I'm in highschool and have better gear than all of the school supplied shit.

Photography/videography classes essentially just hold your hand and walk you through the instruction manual (i.e. technical aspects). From a theoretical standpoint, entry level photography and videography classes are a joke. You'll learn so much more from a drawing, design, or color theory class. Hell, take an art history class and learn from the greats.

I'm not saying you shouldn't study new media, because those can be valuable ways to hone technical skill, but their value is limited by your "traditional art" abilities. But at best these classes give you the tools to make crap.

Now go study perspective drawing.
