I'm extremely interested in getting one and have always wanted one and am finally going to pull the tigger. The thing is no one I know rides or has a license. What's the best way to get one? Which classes do you need to take and what are the steps for getting it?
It may vary by state but the fastest way is to just take the test. But i would not recommend doing that.
There are classes you can take just like for driving. You can do them through the dmv i believe. but id recommend finding somewhere with a little more expertise, where riding is the teachers passion. I know the harley dealership by me does the class.
After the class you get your permit. With that you cant carry passengers, go on interstate, ride at night and have to wear a helmet. You then take the road test to get your full license.
Having done the beginner and intermediate riding courses I would highly recommend going that route. You only need the beginner to get your license but its good to get even that experience under your belt.
Here in MN there are classes all summer long on college campuses usually, its like 180$, a total of 14 - 15 hours and they provide training motorcycles...its super easy and fun. I'd recommend taking the class after it as well, just for more experience.
I've heard GREAT things about motorcycle courses. I knew guys when I was in the Navy that took the courses without ever hardly riding any type of manuals in their life before let alone a dirt bike (classes were mandatory to be allowed to ride one in the military).
